I will believe the Saudis don't see any upcoming problems with Ghawar when they cancel one of their projects due to low oil prices. If they continue to be full steam ahead with increasing their capacity then I think they are aware that Ghawar may not be as robust in 5 years time as they would like us to believe.

Entitlement fantasies meet cold hard reality. What a bummer...

From coast to coast, American teenagers appear to be driving less this summer. Police officers who keep watch on weekend cruising zones say fewer youths are spending their time driving around in circles, with more of them hanging out in parking lots, malls or movie theaters.
The price spike in gasoline, to an average of $4.07 a gallon for regular unleaded, is so recent that government statistics do not yet capture the teenage-driving trend. But the figures show that overall demand for gasoline is dropping. In dozens of interviews, teenagers and their parents said the price of gasoline was forcing hard choices on them.

Hey, we were just talking about this the other day. You don't suppose someone from the NYT is surfing PO.com for a story idea??
Anyway, this is still all I have to say about this:

27.9 for regular. We could cruise all night for a dollar, which was about an hours' pay in those days for us low wage workers. Another 88 cents would get you two hamburgers and a small orange drink at the walk up window at the local McDonalds, at about 10:00. Two bucks for a night's entertainment.
We would know who was cruising by the roar of some far off engine. We knew everybody by their car, and all of those cars by sound, and could tell if somebody had bought a new set of headers or some other equipment for their jalopy.
The little females would typically leave us alone, unfortunately.
In '74 we all got motorcycles (cheaper) and rode for hours on every street and back alley in that town. and up in the hills if the moon was bright enough. This did better attracting the females, for whatever reason. I used to go out with a little brown eyed girl. Once in awhile, I can still feel her hands around my waist, and her warm breath on the back of my shoulder.

Without the teenagers and young people driving by with the stereo cranked so high the windows rattle, it has been pleasant around here. _________________ If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face--for ever."

Perhaps they will bring back the walk up window. Bikes and pedestrians are not welcome at the drive up windows, even after hours. Need a burger ? Get a car. Nobody has cars ? Change the window rules.

I'm so glad of this! I saw a teenager wrap his car around a tree on a sunny morning in January 2007 and was the first on the scene. Neck broken, massive brain trauma, dead as a doornail. WTF? I bet he had just been playing "Grand Theft Auto" or something and imitated the stupid video game.
Out of the cars! Let them ride bicycles and maybe little motor scooters! I'm so sick of VROOM VROOM VROOM!

Its so interesting the way we are groomed from birth to expect certain entitlements and lifestyles..... Dude your not missing out on anything, just keep that money in your pocket and pick a different path in life than the one you were taught to follow. Ah, these be interesting times...
Rather than the hollywood blockbuster-style changes, just a whole whack of simple little shifts - some of them painless, while others extremely painful.
Of course, folks stuck in weekly four or five hundred-mile motoring lifestyles with few if any options - the future looks dreary.
But on the other hand, a lot of the uglier carbon-burning activities will become even more exposed as what they are - truly superfluous nonsense.
I suppose as time goes by - the world will gradually become a quieter place.
Cruisin' - was something I never actually did. Missed that one entirely.
The long slow painful death of American graffiti..........
