Ok let me tell you something

I came from a 3rd world country where gas is more than $11/gal and people make $1/hr. But they will never stop driving or stop buying cars. If you need a girlfriend, you need a car.

If you want to stop oil consumption in developing countries, you first need to stop TV stations broadcasting American movies and American lifestyle. As long as people watch the fancy life in TV, they will keep buying and if they don't have money, who cares, they got so many credit card options with %40 interest, it is mind boggling. And everybody has credit cards.

TS will HTF big time... I know those people, they will never stop buying cars and gas. I know because I was one of them.

Probably being a bit older than you I can think back to a time when the same desires of today's third world stoked the fires of the US population. World War 2 exposed a lot of fairly rural and unsophisticated guys to a world outside the farms or their old neighborhoods. There's even a very old song: "How ya' gonna keep them down on the farm after they seen the city lights".

I had not thought of it until your post but that awareness of a new (and seemingly better world) out there explains at least a good part of the post-war economic boom in the US. Why should we expect human nature to change?

In the late 50's-early 60's the USSR proposed a joint Nuke strike of China. Wipe them off the face of the map kind of thing.The USA rejected the idea. What were they NOT thinking?

It's the idea of the Indians and Chinese having to do it first - be the "leaders" that irks me. There's too much of this going around, far too much blame of the Indians and Chinese. You see it here on the board all the time.

Yes, the Indians and Chinese could well do to stop industrialization, but that alone will not solve their problems. Most people in those countries do not have an industrialized standard of living at the present time, yet they are still overpopulated* and severely damaging their ecosystems. Even the most powered-down Chinese-style rural village may not be sustainable, because their traditional agriculture removes nearly every scrap of native vegetation. Same with places like very poor Bangladesh.

We all need to find different ways to live, not necessarily "return to the old ways." Some old ways were good and fine, others not so fine.

*btw, I consider the US to be the most overpopulated country on Earth, because of our energy hog way of life.

Boy does it make my blood boil to read this crap. The Chinese and Indians are simply following in the footsteps of the Western Countries. We are blaming them for trying to have the life that we already have....
