Cementing their strategic ties, Russia on Monday expressed its readiness to further expand cooperation with India in civilian nuclear energy, defence and space. The two sides also decided to set up a study group to examine the feasibility of a comprehensive economic cooperation agreement.
Recognising that the process of UN reforms is "very complex", India on Sunday said it is not fixated on veto issue but wants all members of the Security Council to be treated equally on the principle of non-discrimination and democratisation.
"It is not that we want to hold on to veto. We will be very happy, if there is no veto at all," Indian officials accompanying Prime Minister Manmohan Singh told reporters

The Brazil/ Russia/India/China bloc is now being called BRIC (pronounced Brick) as a shorthand in policy talks in the west. Venezuela and Iran are the oil and gas tanks for BRIC. All together, the BRIC sphere of influence is about 80% of humanity.
War between AngloAmerica/Israel/Japan and BRIC is likely.
The core EU is trying to pretend to be neutral, but favors arms sales to BRIC to balance hegemonic AngloAmerican power. The EU is also building a new GPS system for BRIC in an attempt to creat a balance of power in space. The EU dearly hopes global war can be deterred. If push comes to shove, France/Germany could end up siding with BRIC. _________________ "The world is changed... I feel it in the water... I feel it in the earth... I smell it in the air... U.S. versus the world (except Japan/Israel)? Anyone like our chances?
As an Indian, I would hate for my country to be part of any block containing Russia and China vis-a-vis the US. Ideological affinities aside, I refer to our strong democratic ideals; it would also be tantamount to suicide, as India imports most of its oil from Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. The US being the dominant naval power in the Arabian Sea and the Persian Gulf could easily cut of these supplies.
Besides, at the moment India enjoys good relations with the US and Israel; India is the second largest, I think purchases of Israeli arms; infact there is talk of a 3-way alliance between the three countries. I think the most likely route for India in case of a confrontation between the great powers would be one of cautious nuetrality.

I think India has clearly demonstrated a much stronger committment to democracy that the US has. There is good reason to believe India could provide a good counter-weight to the authoritarian powers of Russia and China. The three countries are pretty much equally balanced in power.
Partnering with the US would be much less rewarding for India. The US has demonstrated it can't be trusted and would likely cut India loose whenever the opportunity presented a benefit to the US. It would not be a partnership of equals. _________________ Gravity is not a force, it is a boundary layer.

India and Canada have agreed to put bilateral ties on a "faster track" even as New Delhi urged for greater investment, especially in the infrastructure sector, in the country. Hardly a month after India and China signed a landmark agreement to settle their border dispute, a Chinese Army patrol has intruded deep into Indian territory and stayed there for close to 24 hours before withdrawing last week.
The border violation took place in Asafila area of the Upper Subansiri district of Arunachal Pradesh
The markedly different perce-ption and approach of Bangladesh and India to the whole gamut of water sharing issues was once again brought to the fore at a recent seminar at BIISS entitled 'Significance of Strategic Water Sharing in the Ganga-Brahmaputra-Meghna Basin' that was designed primarily to highlight the impact of the Farakka barrage and the potential impact of India's river linking project on Bangladesh.
The water dispute has the potential for serious friction between the two neighbours if we do not take a calm and level-headed approach to the matter. Not surprisingly, this issue has been the main determinant of the level and nature of our bilateral relations

India and Russia intend to proactively promote BrahMos anti-ship cruise missile on the world market, Indian President Abdul Kalam said at the Mashinostroyeniye (Mechanical Engineering) science and production association in the Moscow region on Saturday. "We shall be making an aggressive marketing [of BrahMos missiles] on the foreign market because these missiles are very good," the President said. "Mr. Yefremov [Mashinostroyeniye general designer] is a friend of mine and our friendship is based on cooperation in the missile field," Kalam added.
The palpable change in their Kashmir policy and the prospect of the oldest running cause of conflict between India and Pakistan at last ceasing to be so, fill us with optimism.
Our optimism stems from the fact that there has been a distinct attitudinal change and a turnaround in long-held positions of both the countries on the matter. It is more evident in the case of Pakistan, where President Musharraf's recent statements might suggest a 'reversal' on the Kashmir policy.

IRNA-Indian Petroleum Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar on Monday expressed the confidence that following the on-going preliminary talks with the Iranian and Pakistani officials, the Iran-Pakistan-India gas pipeline project will be "off the ground by early next year".

Fed by a decade-long economic boom, India's ever-growing appetite for energy is quietly reshaping the way it operates in the world, changing relations with its neighbors, extending its reach to oil states as far flung as Sudan and Venezuela, and overcoming Washington's resistance to its nuclear ambitions.
Hovering over India's energy quest is its biggest competitor: China, which is also scouring the globe to line up new energy sources.
The combined appetite of the two Asian giants is raising oil prices and putting greater demands on world oil supplies.
If American IT workers are having a tough time competing against their Indian counterparts, what's going to happen when emerging, even-lower-wage countries like Vietnam get into the offshoring game? The answer, in fact, bodes well for U.S. technologists.
A study released last week by outsourcing consultancy neoIT says entry-level programmers and help-desk workers in Vietnam earn an average, annual salary of about $3,000 per year. By contrast, India's IT graduates are paid about $5,400 -- not a lot, but almost twice as much as the Vietnamese

Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said on Wednesday his country wanted India to have a permanent seat in an expanded United Nations Security Council.

EVERY time I visit India, Indians always ask me to compare India with China. Lately, I have responded like this: If India and China were both highways, the Chinese highway would be a six-lane, perfectly paved road, but with a huge speed bump off in the distance labeled "Political reform: How in the world do we get from communism to a more open society?"
India, by contrast, is like a highway full of potholes, with no sidewalks and half the street lamps broken
Rising Maoist insurgency and economic hardship are causing a exodus from Nepal into India. There have been "large population transfers" from the Himalayan Kingdom into India in the past few weeks.
Official sources said that many Nepalese villages were being abandoned, as the major checkpoints are witnessing about double the normal flow. New Delhi is concerned about this phenomenon, particularly since the Nepalese economy records no signs of recovery and Royal Nepal Army has had little success against the Maoist rebels who continue to strike at will.

Political commentators in India are fond of calling Pakistan a “failed state,” given the havoc wrought by uncontrollable jihadis in our neighboring country. Few Indians, however, are willing to admit that their own country is hurtling towards anarchy. While Leftwing extremist violence and Islamic terror are rising at an alarming pace, the Indian state and the intellectual class refuse to even recognize the existence of any serious threat.
Foreign Minister Khurshid Mehmood Kasuri Friday said US President George Bush has expressed keen interest on Pakistan-India peace process.
During the meeting with President Bush the atmosphere was cordial. Important issues like Kashmir, Pak-US relations, Pakistan's genuine security needs and other matters came under discussion, he told Geo TV.
India and China are racing each other to win the race to Asian suzerainty, but who will breast the tape at the end will depend a whole lot on the kind of needs that the West has as well as the ability of both these nations to supply that demand
