I will believe the Saudis don't see any upcoming problems with Ghawar when they cancel one of their projects due to low oil prices. If they continue to be full steam ahead with increasing their capacity then I think they are aware that Ghawar may not be as robust in 5 years time as they would like us to believe.

Peace all,

Iran builds advanced naval weapon

Mon, 04 Aug 2008 11:33:19

Iran has developed a high-tech naval weapons system capable of targeting any warship within a range of 300 kilometers from its shores.

A top Iranian commander explained that the weapons system introduces state-of-the-art technology never used before.

"The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps recently tested a naval weapon which is definitely capable of sending any warship within a distance of 300 km to the bottom of the sea," IRGC Commander Major General Mohammad-Ali Jafari told reporters Monday.

"The weapon design and production technology used in this weapon is completely indigenous to Iran and has never been employed by any other country," he added.

Jafari said the new weapon has gone into mass production after successful testing.

The commander also commented on Iran's ability to close off the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway that connects the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman. "The length of Iran's coastline along the Strait of Hormuz, its unique geographical position, and the coastal heights make it possible for Iran to close off the strait," said Jafari.

He added that Iranian armed forces could easily block the strait for an infinite time' using the available military equipment.

In early July, IRGC staged a major military maneuver to demonstrate its defense capabilities amid escalating US and Israeli threats of a strike against the country's nuclear facilities.

Jafari pointed out that the maneuver had achieved all its objectives, despite efforts made by Western media outlets to portray it otherwise.

"Eight missiles were fired simultaneously; however, poor images captured on camera gave rise to certain ambiguities," he said, referring to some speculations about the failure of the military exercise.

I think that Iran is going to cause massive damage to any military power that attacks it if Iran were to left free in developing its capabilities as it is buying as much time as possible.

In an upcoming nuclear war, what makes you think Iran would be subdued by a ship?

The drumbeat for a Pearl Harbor style (i.e., sneak) attack on Iran continues.

Why not... the Israel-first gang snookered us into attacking Iraq... no reason to believe we're any smarter that we were then.

The US has been building bases within kilometers of the Iranian border, we make repeated charges about Iranian-supplied weapons killing American soldiers in Iraq, and the revelation by Seymour Hersh, the US's premier investigative reporter, that, late last year the Bush administration launched - with the support of the Democratic leadership in Congress - a US$400 million covert program "designed to destabilize [Iran's] religious leadership", including cross-border activities by US special operations forces and a low-level "war of terror" through surrogates in regions where Balochi and Ahwazi Arab minorities are strongest. (Precedents for this terror campaign include previous US Central Intelligence Agency-run [CIA] campaigns in Afghanistan in the 1980s, using car bombs and even camel bombs against the Russians, and in Iraq in the 1990s, using car bombs and other explosives in an attempt to destabilize Saddam Hussein's regime.)

The only issue I see is how we will attack them and make it look like we "had no choice".

We're at a point that attacking Iran seems like madness... The repercussions could be immense.

I don't see a war being started by anyone else than a trigger-happy Israel. Will it happen or not, I don't know.

Dutch, you know that if we wanted to, we could take them out with a plane based in Kansas.

Take what out? Having bases nearby is very important for quick reaction.

Your Kansas plane takes hours to get to the Middle East.

Uhhh ... that wouldn't be a radar would it? Because that has already been invented.

Sounds to me like Iraq's old information minister has got himself a job in the Iranian military.

They're definitely pushing their luck, that's for sure.

Quote:
Iran says it has tested a new advanced weapon to sink enemy ships.

The Revolutionary Guards commander said the weapon had a range of more than 300km (180 miles) and used technology never seen before.

The test comes two days after an international deadline passed for Iran to answer questions about its controversial nuclear programme.

"The weapon has been developed entirely using domestic technology and according to our information so far no country has used this technology before," Gen Jafari said.

"We can confidently say that none of the enemy's vessels or warships operating in a radius of more than 300km from Iran's borders will be safe from this weapon, and without a doubt, they will be sunk deep into the region's waters."

Israeli leaders have threatened to intervene militarily against Iran if it develops nuclear weapons technology, while the US has not ruled out the use of force.

This kind of comic-book style doomsday weapon braggadoccio is just the thing for Iran to show the international community that it only seeks to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

This sounds like a bluff to me, but it's hard to say. A rail gun maybe, or thermo-electric cannon? I've read some theories about using shaped explosive charges in water to create shockwaves that will crumple the hulls of ships, but not recently. Interesting none the less, even if it is just saber rattling.

Seems a little excessive. Proportionate response and all that?

Probably what would happen is that everything would immediately stop moving through the strait of Hormuz, then the US dollar and the global economy would turn into a smouldering hell hole.
