Saw one of these a few weeks ago at the local outdoors stores.
Thought it would be good emergency item to have in the house.
There are other versions of this out there... Some models have complaints about failed LEDs after dropping. This model claims to be OK for repeated drops. Not the brightest LED, but good for emergencies.

Anyone else have suggestions for good homestead products? |

Yep - I dont usually endorse products lol, but this one has been such an incredible help to me this year, that I don't know how I did without it before.

If you're going to be gardening any - get a couple (and invite a friend along to help! ). It makes my weeding go 3x faster than it did by hand. Growing more of our own food and expanding our farm means I have less time to sit for hours on end and pull weeds. This literally has tripled the amount of weeds I can get out (roots and all) in the same amount of time.

| The Nightstar looks like it will last for many decades. The only reason I haven't bought a few yet is because of price, as it is the most expensive. The new StarCore LED makes me glad that I waited to purchase one. Here is a review. |

Please take note of the warning:
| Quote: | | As a result of the strong magnetic field generated by this light, the light MUST be stored and used away from anything sensitive to a strong magnetic field. DO NOT place near a TV, monitor, floppy disks, hard drives, credit cards (don't stuff it in your back pocket with your wallet!), video tapes, or sensitive electronics. |
I bought two of these but I really think they are too dangerous to be used in my place which is full of electronic kit. I've put them away and gone back to a normal led torch with rechargeable batteries. |

I think by the time we REALLY need these, electronics probably won't be much of an issue. It may be a good idea to buy now while one can and these can be used in the future when batteries can't be found so easily. These could even be herilooms, being as sturdy as they seem to be.
I'm wary of the ebay ones, as those are probably the older dimmer LED. |

If you will be doing any real digging work I strongly recommend a good pick axe. I've been busting my back trenching with a shovel for the past couple of weekends. Today I got a new handle to fix my pick axe and I'm busting my back with it. It's moving much faster though. If I was in good enough shape to go 8 hours solid with this thing I'd be done today. But 4 today and then 2 more evenings and I'm done is good enough for me at the moment.
Post peak is really going to suck when backhoes aren't an option everywhere. _________________ shame on us, doomed from the start

Julian, thanks for pointing that out about the magnetic issues.. Forgot to add that in my original post. If your a camper and navigate with a compass DONT pack this light... it could bugger your compass and you might find yourself in a bad spot.
Good catch on the new StarCore as well... Im going to order a couple and give one to my Dad as a (late) Fathers Day gift.
Already have a Garden Claw... I can definitely second that recommendation.
Along the pick axe lines, stocking up on quality gardening tools would be a good idea. |

Thanks carlins,
Gotta get one of those claws. My hands are detroyed from weeding especially those bastard creeping buttercups and I rarely get all the roots out. _________________ www.askaboutenergy.com |
