Typical oil production leaves 70% of the resource in the earth. In today's market of dwindling world supply and increasing demand, more Alberta companies plan to pump carbon dioxide (CO2) into reservoirs to help draw out more oil.

Eddy Isaacs, managing director of the Alberta Energy Research Institute, said U.S. experience shows that the process known as "CO2 miscible flooding" can average an additional 14% recovery from a reservoir. That may not sound like much, but if costs are controlled, it can add up to big bucks.
