Asian oil companies, latecomers to the global hunt for precious oil and gas reserves, have finally come up with a potential recipe for success in trumping western global oil giants: by teaming up among themselves.

The idea of Asian oil partnerships as a counterweight to the dominance of Exxon Mobil, BP, Royal Dutch Shell, or Chevron as well as of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), was first floated as early as 2000 by Malaysia’s former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, a champion for a pan-Asian political block against rising western influences.
