The Humboldt County Peak Oil Action Group will be sponsoring a free two-part Lawns to Gardens workshop on Feb. 6 and March 13, beginning at 7 p.m. both nights, in the Arcata Community Center Senior Room.

Organizer and leader of the first workshop Susan Ornelas said that they would like to encourage edible landscapes in communities that may just be seeing green.

“We aren’t anti-lawn,” Ornelas stressed. “We’d just like to see some wider garden beds, and more edibles in the landscape, like blueberries or plum trees.”

Ornelas, who is also part of the Open Space Agriculture Advisory Committee for the city of Arcata, feels that even cities could be planting more edibles like fruit trees in their public spaces.
