Without the absorption of carbon by the oceans and the linked production of free oxygen by ocean phytoplankton, the Earth's atmosphere would consist almost entirely of carbon dioxide, with a little bit of nitrogen. Temperatures would hover around 600º Celsius, and atmospheric pressure would be 60 times heavier than it is currently.
