Choosing a pantry

Heat, light, and humidity shorten shelf life, so the best place for a pantry is a dark, dry, cool area of the house that receives little traffic. The exact humidity depends on the types of food stored.

Stocking a pantry

You should stock what you normally eat.

Kinds of food storage

  • Drying
  • Canning
  • Salting
  • Root cellaring
  • Storage in buckets

Rotation

Foods have a shelf life, and should be rotated so that the oldest foods are eaten first. This will prevent food spoilage.
