GE to stop making Light Bulbs

Unread postby Kingcoal » Thu 10 Jul 2008, 18:16:31

Link

General Electric, co-founded by Thomas Edison has been producing light bulbs since Edison invented them. Now they are looking to turn out the lights. Sign of the times?

GE is the only remaining company who appeared on the original Dow Jones Industrial index, which everyone is familiar with. It's still on that index, 112 years later.

Hmmm....guess that means they're gonna need a new corporate motto? "We bring good things to light" isn't gonna fit very well anymore.

Interesting that they consider jet engines to be growth sectors. I'm sure the military demand for jets will continue, but the civilian sector is about to crump hard.

Of a thousand burning bridges
Sifting through the ashes every day
What we thought would never end
Now is nothing more than a memory
The way things were before
I lost my way" - OCMS

Actually it's "we bring good things to life", not "light".

GE will have absolutely no problem making the best business decisions when the time comes. They've closed-down or sold many legacy businesses over the years.

Aircraft engines actually makes most of its money via parts sales, not new engine builds. (A lot of new engines are sold at a loss or zero profit just to have the parts business.) Expect operators to keep older engines in service as long as they can. GE is still making parts for engines built in the 1950's for example.

Smart move. The writing is on the wall for the traditional tungsten filament light bulb. The far superior energy efficiency and reliability of the LED is going to blow away the traditional bulb over the next decade.

The LED desk lamp next to my computer uses 4.5watts, compared to my old lamp which used 60.

They've recently sold their plastics division (GE Polymer) to Sabic Polymershapes, a Saudi company. Did they see the writing on the wall for petroleum products?
