Massive "new" oil discoveries?

Unread postby zeke » Thu 24 Jul 2008, 12:45:46

I spotted this list of oil discoveries in a thread where the poster explained that "massive amounts" of oil will be coming to market over the next 10 years thanks to these new miracle discoveries...

I'm inclined to think that these "new discoveries" are simply chewed meat which has been discussed before, simply sexed up to sound like the Big Thing that Will Save Us which the cornucopians love to talk about.

Never mind that some of this miracle oil is 5 miles under the ocean and bedrock, or that some of the "discoveries" are theoretical guesses based on what we might hope to find based on something else.

Rather than taking on an unpaid part time research job debunking this stuff, I'm hoping that someone here knows of a site which has done that already, and to which these googly-eyed children can be referred for some edumacation?

thanks!

I think that 10 billion in Mexico was revised down to like 50 million soon after the initial press release. 1 billion barrels in Iran is not much at current consumption rates. The Petrobras finds are promising but still might only had a few million barrels a day to global production in another 5 years or so.. will soften landing at best but cant alter peak. There is a a youtube video of congressman Bartlett I think his name is, anyways he went into great depth about peak oil in testimony to congress and stated that even another TRILLION barrels would only put peak oil off another 8 years or so. I am sure there are many variables in considering that hypothetical but you can see you really need a huge huge find of oil to really change things.

yeah...it really is a monument to our gluttony.

I don't know how else to say it!

I'd like to think I could be just fine on a minimal amount of energy, but then there are those around me for whom life is hell without non-stop air conditioning, ultra-expensive cars, ridiculous housing, disposibility, etc.

I know how we got here. I wish more would wake up to it.
