According to an article in the August 2006 issue of World News Magazine, the US has about 374 billion barrels of oil remaining as stranded oil in existing and abandoned oil fields in the US. Under existing oil production technology about one third of the oil in the reservoir is removed through primary oil production and some additional oil is being produced through existing conventional secondary and tertiary methods.

As a footnote, Wavefront’s Primawave environmental technology, which is based on the same underlying principals as Powerwave, has been successfully implemented for the remediation of contaminated groundwater due to old leaking oil and diesel fuel tanks at service stations in Florida as well as many industrial sites. In addition, Primawave is being used to aid in the clean up of contaminated groundwater at an old, 75 acre former refinery site in New York, of which there exists 149 active refineries (down from 301 in 1982) in the US requiring similar remediation.
