This is nearly unbelievable;

In downtown Charlotte, a luxury condominium is scheduled for construction this year that will allow residents to drive their cars into a garage elevator, ride up to the floor they live on, and park right next to their front door

Robotic car storage...

Image

It's amazing the lengths we go to park the cars.

Image

It's the confluence of the rise in value of the city downtowns and the clinging to the automobile. They are built to deal with the biggest SUV's. Soon to be a lot of wasted space.

I believe that storage system is in Wolfsburg, Germany. It's particularly dramatic, but they have become more common. With high land values, it becomes cheaper to build them than excavate a hole big enough to fit all the cars. They are space efficient relative to structured drive in parking with all the ramps and drive aisles needed.

Wasted space or low cost high density urban encampment? Such a building left derelict n the 3r world would quickly be utilized. Post car world likely means a lot more 3rd world adaptations such as this building offers great opportunity for. I can imagine folks converting that space into a wonderland. Or a hell hole. Sniper's lair?

Might work for electric cars, but older cars I'd rather the smell was more distant. I've seen the occasional warehouse conversion where people park their "I'm proud to own this" cars in the open plan living area.

I can't see this condo selling unless they target classic car owners.
