Peak oil groups/networks in Australia?

Unread postby Ben » Fri 26 Sep 2008, 20:31:23

Are there are any peak oil groups/networks in Oz, or people looking to join such groups? I kind of left the "peak oil" community several years ago (too much doom porn) but right now I'm finding myself starved for conversation from people who "get it". I'm in Melbourne.

If you dig through the older ANZ threads you might find some more.

I'm in Melbourne Ben..

I've not really been active in a local group other than one online Yahoo group I joined a couple of years ago. But I was too distracted by peakoil.com and all the other captivating sites like theoildrum.com etc to really engage locally.

Your post has inspired me to join this group
PEAK OIL MELBOURNE

There are a few others around if you google "melbourne peak oil".

Thanks guys.

I'm in Melbourne Micki. I'll give that group a look.

Thanks for that link RacerJace, I'll give it a look. I just think it'd be good to finally meet up with some like-minded people. It occurred to me recently that I've never actually talked in person with someone who really understood the issue.

At least a lot of people nowadays are agreeing that there is a potential problem looming. But it is still very hard to get a two way communication going. Anytime I discuss energy with someone it is me doing the talking and them mainy nodding. At least they don't try to change subject quickly anymore.

I live in Tasmania. There are no formal groups near me (so far as I am aware but I haven't checked for the past few months) but the general social groups I mix in are very aware and prepped (maybe it just us crazy Tasmanians LOL).

.

there is an ASPO in Sydney but it's more orientated on urban transports , less on the industrial , social and economic aspects
The transport issue isn't I think a peak oil issue at all , IMHO it's an urbanisation issue
after all what the point of commuting down town if you'r out of a job

Australia is such a vast country! A PO group, even if it would be here in Brisbane would not be interesting for me because it is likely to be in a suburb, far away or half an hour drive.
There are quite some people interested in community gardening and sustainability, but they never touch the political side. Anyone round me things are going on like this (unless my family).

Thanks for the recommendation Dude.

Everyone (antipodean and otherwise) is always welcome to come chat about local issues at TOD ANZ. My 2 co-editors are from Melbourne, as is one of our contributors.

Regarding ASPO Australia - it isn't a Sydney group (though the Sydney section is probably the biggest and most active. Bruce Robinson is based in Perth, for starters, as is David Worth.

Other Oz PO forums :

ROEOZ Yahoo Group - very doomerish
