As distressing as the $700bn giveaway was, I think this was actually the most dangerous provision of TARP.

Of a thousand burning bridges
Sifting through the ashes every day
What we thought would never end
Now is nothing more than a memory
The way things were before
I lost my way" - OCMS

I agree SPG, my hope was at least the powers that be would understand that full discovery is what we want in this process, not a continued "evaluation" of the market value. Not good, it only supports the band-aid effect instead of true disclosure of how leveraged these companies actually are...

Hmmm.

Location: Hobbiton, but it's looking more like Mordor by the day...oh! hey Sauron, I didn't see you behind me!

This is why I think everything will continue to implode. They are not addressing one of the main issues which caused the crisis, dishonest accounting practices and opaque balance sheets. This just exacerbates the problem of mistrust and dishonest accounting, so the slide downwards will continue. The guys on the TF trumpet this a lot, and I have to agree with them. No one is going to loan to or do business with anyone else if they don't believe their balance sheets. No one knows who has the hot potato and could blow up next.
