A Question About Statistics

Unread postby jamest » Sat 15 Nov 2008, 13:27:05

We widely see the statistic that the U.S. consumes about 140 billion gallons of gasoline per year.

I have a few questions about this statistic:

1) Does this include diesel?
1a) If not, how much diesel does the U.S. consume per year?
1b) If it does, how is the gasoline equivalent of diesel calculated?

2) How do we relate gasoline (or diesel) volume to crude oil volume?
We all know that 1 barrel equals 42 gallons by volume. However,
a barrel of crude oil on average yields only about 19.5 gallons of
gasoline. The remainder goes into other products (heating oil, jet
fuel, asphalt, etc.). In addition, there is a loss of energy to the
refining process. So the question is, if we conserve a billion gallons of gasoline (or diesel), for example, how much of a savings in crude oil does that amount to?

Any ideas?

The 140 bgy figure appears to be only gasoline.

The US consumes about 9 million barrels per day of gasoline and
4 million barrels per day of diesel. So you can multiply by 42
gallons times 365 days.

I don't know the btu loss during the refining process, but there
is volume gain. A 42 gallon of crude results in about
44 gallons of product, before any additives are included because
some of the refined product is less dense than crude.

I will point out the popular media in the US almost ALWAYS reports
as "crude", "crude oil" or "oil" what is actually the larger "oil
products supplied". So when the report is we are using 21 mbd
of crude, it's overstated by 5 to 10%. The 21 mbd figure
includes the original volume of crude, plus the expansion of
volume plus non-oil additives to oil products(such as ethanol).

The energy efficiency, including products we don't use for energy, is ~85% IIRC.
