We widely see the statistic that the U.S. consumes about 140 billion gallons of gasoline per year.
I have a few questions about this statistic:
1) Does this include diesel?
1a) If not, how much diesel does the U.S. consume per year?
1b) If it does, how is the gasoline equivalent of diesel calculated?
2) How do we relate gasoline (or diesel) volume to crude oil volume?
We all know that 1 barrel equals 42 gallons by volume. However,
a barrel of crude oil on average yields only about 19.5 gallons of
gasoline. The remainder goes into other products (heating oil, jet
fuel, asphalt, etc.). In addition, there is a loss of energy to the
refining process. So the question is, if we conserve a billion gallons of gasoline (or diesel), for example, how much of a savings in crude oil does that amount to?
Any ideas?
