However, this particular guy is a fool if he's simultaneously announcing a Kondratieff winter and trying to sell gold. In a deflationary period such as a Kondratieff winter gold is not a good investment.

This article, gotten via the Denninger blog, goes a long way in explaining why what we are seeing today on the stock market, is exactly the same as three previous cycles. Only this one will be worse due to Alan Greenspan's monkeying around in the early 2000 time period. Because of him, things are gonna be a lot worse than they might have been had he left things alone.
It is a long read, but well worth it.

Lay-offs at the completion of projects are common. So you save while you work for the eventuality of being let go. Then live on the savings while trying to find work. I am quite familiar with this gig.

Following your experience of the system, I would have thought you'd have adopted an attitude more tolerant of the working calss and less tolerant of the system. Interesting.
