Mount Storm Wind Project completed

Unread postby vampyregirl » Wed 31 Dec 2008, 06:49:40

The NedPower Mount Storm Wind Energy Project in Mt Storm West Virginia is now fully operational, consisting of 132 turbines producing up to 264 megawatts, enough to power about 66k homes and businesses.
ShellWindEnergy and Dominion each hold a 50% share in the project. The output from the wind park will be sold into PJM Interconnection, a regional transmission operator and wholesale electricity market.

The current rule of thumb is $2M/MW.
On 9/29/08, cube wrote: "The Dow will drop to 4,000 within 2 years". The current tally is 239 bold predictions, 9 right, 96 wrong, 134 open. If you've heard here, it's probably wrong.

Now they can stop stripping the mountains and turning the villages into waste.

I have family from WV, so I've been there a number of times. Regarding the coal mining industry, there have been a number of horrid tragedies for sure. So in a perfect world the state government there wouldn't be bought and paid for by big coal, and would keep on top of that industry more with heavy regulation.

But in general, coal mining isn't all bad. You see, WV is REALLY freakin hilly. It's hard to find a patch of flat land. They actually need more flat land for development, so at the end the day blasting some mountain tops off is helpful.

Other side of pond:
Windfarm revolution tangled in red tape

Terry Macalister
The Guardian, Monday 29 December 2008

• 262 UK projects await planning permission
• Renewable energy target looks increasingly remote

Britain's wind power industry is facing a double blow of lengthy planning delays and rapidly rising construction costs in a crisis that threatens to sink the government's climate-change goals.
