Unread postby Niagara » Fri 16 Jan 2009, 11:31:15

Breaking news, no link yet.

Looks like Circuit City is the latest electronics retail giant to take a dirt nap.

35,000 jobs lost according to CNBC.

It's on the breaking news banner at MSNBC.

Not exactly a surprise. CNN had an article earlier this month, warning than any retailer who entered bankruptcy in this environment would not survive.

This will certainly affect my old hometown, where the southern US distribution center for CC is located - 500 jobs gone, I think...

Oh well, the Best Buy DC is just across the street, I'm sure they can absorb them all.

And to think I almost bought a camera there a couple of weeks ago...guess I better look around to see if I've got any gift cards that need to be liquidated

And good riddance! Of all the big box stores I've been to, CC has got to be one of the worst - even CompUSA is marginally better...lol.

Now let's see if the Great American Non-Spender can take down Best Buy next...hehe.

I wonder if they'll finally have some REAL liquidation sales, not the faux liquidation prices they've been doing... ?

Then again, not sure I want to buy if I can't even return within 30 days. In my epxerience, when I have trouble with electronics it's usually in that time frame.

Show me a shopping center with Circuit City, Linens-N-Things and Goodys as anchors, with a Bennigans on an outparcel, and I will show you a ghost town.

Sigh, I think I'm gettin old. I remember a time when Bennigans was the only game in town -- there was no Outback, Chili's, Applebees etc. etc.

I miss their Monte Cristo sandwich.. sort of a big deep fried ham turkey and swiss french toast thing.

Truly, the Geography of Nowhere is coming to fruition before our very eyes.

What will we do with all of this empty real estate when we don't have the funds to "repurpose" it properly? What a sad waste!

No need to sweat this one, Ian. All we gotta do is to just leave it like it is and Mother Nature will "repurpose" this real estate just fine. :-D Check out the cities of Detroit and Flint to see what I'm talking about.
