Wealth does not pass 3 generations

"The Chinese have an expression. (fu bu guo san dai) Literally: Wealth does not pass three generations.

It's difficult enough for a family to accumulate wealth in the first place. If however, the above Chinese proverb is indeed true, we suspect that in order for the family to remain wealthy past the third generation mark will require a robust investment plan which would include the characteristics of discipline, patience and probably a bit of luck too."

I totally disagree. The problem is the standard of living usually increases when someone receives wealth.

For simplicity lets take $5 million (which many DON'T consider wealthy) invested in bonds which get 4% interest. That would be over $16,600/month.

I bet most of us live on much less than that. My wife and I live on about $3,000/month in the city and we could cut that down by a third if we needed to.

So that means we could invest the remaining $13,300/month which would continue to grow at 4% and help keep up with inflation.

The English version is "Shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves in three generations" (The implication of 'shirtsleeves' is manual labor)

Nice generalisation, but thousands of wealthy families have kept their wealth for centuries. My own observation is that families need to pass down strong values and principles with the "wealth" or it disappears. If they just see themselves as being wealthy, i.e being defined by their money then the spending or hoarding of it defines the family. Its interesting at the moment seeing the Wedgewood family after eight generations looking at taking back over their family company.

But if the family prides itself on its education, innovation, hard work, good name etc it means that every generation will be held to very high standards by the previous ones and this will create excellence which ultimately can build new fortunes.
On a more cynical level total incompetents have often got a network of "peers" to support them. In many cases the elite schools help to maintain this network. One case in point is a former leader of a major power.

If the only thing one generation passes on is money alone then its more of a liability than an asset. But if it pases on strong values or a support network then wealth can survive many generations.

I've got to agree with Coal on this one. I'm a professor and I tell my students that any family in the US that has three generations of good management will be rich. The catch is getting that three generations of good management.

We have a family of car dealers in our town who are very wealthy right now and have pretty good management. Still, I think sticking to their core business may be the end of the third generation's advantage. They sell the three big brands of American cars, and haven't made many sales lately.

They own all the land under the state offices all over town, so that's a steady income.

I don't care about the cars, but I know a lot of people who work for them and will be out of a job if this slump continues.

It's too bad, but I think it is true that the third generation ruins the business. Unless they figure something else out!
Deep in the mud and slime of things, even there, something sings.

We still have a lot of multi-generation wealth in my family, although some of it has been taken by eminent domain, or squandered away by various lazy relatives.

I bought my grandfather's farms, homes, acreage, businesses, equipment and other assets so that some of my lazy relatives (aunts, uncles and cousins) don't get their hands on it.

I come from a very old line of Irish stock who were routed during the potato famine 1820's.

The village priest rounded up the 16 remaining adults from the village of over 200 8 years before. Amongst themselves they selected a couple to sponsor to Australia.

5 generations ago my great great great grandfather selected 10 miles square 25 miles from Melborne central.

When my great grandfather died in 1974 he owned a huge farm and most of the shopping center of an inner city suburb. His children are still fighting over his will.

The family has built wealth by a code. A good portion of which is in how children are raised.
There were some rules:
Children are to be kept properly but never spoilt with unnecessary items.
Adolescents are to be nurtured in their education; or in a chosen career.
If you are not at school or working you have 2 weeks to pack your bags.
You will get 1 shot at microfinance from the family in your ealy 20's.
If you blow it you can sort yourself out (ie. get a job)
If you marry and bring forth progeny; your deposit on a mortgage will be paid; to make sure the grandkids are around.
Only the eldest son will inherit on the death of the father; how generous he is with others is his choice. (This aspect has been the subject of the court challenge since 1974).

More importantly; as well as relevant to peak oil scenarios, was the idea that "Anything is open for discussion at the family table; let the family decide what can go further."

Funny enough; I am the only one of 33 1st cousins to not go to college, I am also the eldest son of a litigant to a huge estate.

I always felt I could not trust in the status quo. I am the black sheep.

I know from experience that it works a bit like this if running on instinct:

Poor, struggling soul gets a break& makes the most of it.

Said soul's children see how hard they have worked& honour this by following their lead.

3rd generation; complacecency sets in.

When I decided to 'drop out' in the early 1980's it was perfectly logical to me. I wanted to be happy. I had met happy people and wanted to be one.
None of these were particularly rich. Some were poor.
In my family I was surrounded by wealthy miserable professionals.

So now? Well who knows? I feel that letting go will be the most difficult psycological preparation. I have a lot less to let go of, than those who followed the wealth building model in the family.
If by some miraculous cause we do escape the current mess in the economy; I will eventually inherit a lot of dough.
If not; well I have lived my own life.

I think that was the intention of my GGGG.
I feel so fortunate to have lived the life and had the family I have; proud that I have my own measure of success.

The Australia laws must be different than US laws because the above would never work here.

First the eldest son would pay estate tax which can cost a pretty penny. Then if he wanted to distribute anything to other siblings he could only give them $13,000/year or else they would be obligated to pay gift tax.

Ever heard of the term "survivor bias"?

You're only looking at success stories. The millions of family fortunes that have been lost over the years are not recorded anywhere and we don't hear about them.

The few thousand families that managed to hang on to their wealth get all of the attention.

Very true but most of the time it is human error which can be controlled. Such as not diversifiying investments, standard of living, or greed to obtain more wealth.
How can Ludi spend 8-10 hrs/day on the internet and claim to be homesteading???
