These figures have been calculated by removing the consumption figures from the most productive countries and then displaying the top twenty results.

Sources used were the BP Review for oil production and a combination of the BP Review and the CIA Factbook for the consumption figures.

Country Net Export Figure (MBD)

1. Saudi Arabia- 8,622,000

2. Russia- 7,089,000

3. Iran- 2,595,000

4. U.A.E- 2,513,000

5. Kuwait- 2,484,000

6. Norway- 2,245,000

7. Iraq- 2,123,000

8. Nigeria-1,870,000

9. Venezuela- 1,847,000

10. Angola- 1,825,000

11. Algeria- 1,682,000

12. Libya- 1,580,000

13. Kazakhstan- 1,325,000

14. Qatar- 1,274,000

15. Mexico- 1,118,000

16. Canada- 943,000

17. Azerbaijan- 843,000

18. Oman- 662,000

19. Sudan- 400,000

20. Colombia- 384,000

If I am not mistaken, 7 out of the 20 above had declines in production between 2007 and 2008

Mexico -9%
Nigeria -8%
Norway -4.1%
Canada -2%
Venzuela -1.9%
Russia -0.8%
iran -0.2%

The two delightful nations of Mexico and Iran are the most important examples of the "export land" effect: countries with big enough domestic population to consume substantial quantities of their own oil.

I know it is only January 2010 but I am anxious, has anyone got an updated list of the 2009 countries? Is Mexico still in the top 20?

For these numbers, the BP statistical review will come out mid-June for 2009 stats (about the same day this post was created, one year later).
