What oil is used for.

I'm trying to break down the usage of oil into different areas in order to give a clearer picture of the whole situation.

So far I've found that about 61% is used for transportation.

http://cadlab6.mit.edu/2.009.wiki/ancho ... sportation

7-8% is used for plastics.

Anyone else have other sources that help paint the picture.

Is that pie chart for the World or for the US?

Thanks for posting pstarr.

Whereabouts would plastics fall under that pie chart?

Obviously to make plastic from oil there has to be some post-refined name for it. Just can't see it there.

I see.

If that was a pie chart for the global situation then the percentage would be 7-8% to match the MIT source above.

Interesting to see the situation in the USA.

As it were, it would seem that most plastics are produced overseas in Asia (cheaper/lax regs), thus the much higher world figure for plastics than the U.S.

This table gives a detailed breakdown of fuel oil, diesel and kerosene use by application.

For example, total diesel/kerosene consumption on farms in the US is about 200,000 barrels per day.

Lets not forget about vinyl, nylon, rayon and other synthetic fabrics, artificial rubber (mainly for tires by the millions), welding fuels, jet fuel, diesel, and additives for pesticides and too many other things to be mentioned.
