In anticipation of 'life after the oil crash' and just to demonstrate that it can be done, with only a year round average of only about 2 hours a day of effort, I work with organic methods 4,000' (less than a half of an acre) of planting bed, much of it planted and harvested 2 and even 3 times a year, using only a shovel (that I found discarded on a construction site 3 years ago), a masonry (meaning large and heavy) hoe, a leaf rake and two 3 gallon metal buckets. That's it for tools. It's much more effective to carry materials in the buckets than with a wheelbarrow. A large knife is handy for harvesting certain items.
