What 17 million barrels of Oil looks like

Unread postby energyhoggin » Thu 27 Aug 2009, 21:35:06

2300 N Twin City Hwy, Nederland, TX‎

post this address in google search and choose the maps option and scroll up to get a birds eye view of the oil terminal, the terminal is listed as holding 17 million barrels when they took the pic but since then we have added a few more 660000 barrel tanks adding to the total capacity of 21 million

Notice the wetland next to the oil tanks. I bet most of the oil in those tanks could fit into that wetland.

Not that I would *want* to put it there, of course. :)

Farther to the northwest is a little bay. All that oil could *easily* fit into that bay.

I spent some time in that area 3 or 4 years ago assisting for a bid on placing security cameras for coast guard between Beaumont / Sabine Pass

Nice place to visit, very glad I don't live there

Looks like an awful lot of storage just up I-69, too.

Is it weird that my first reaction was, "if one of those caught on fire, would it start a chain reaction, and if so, would it vaporize the adjacent freeway or merely melt it?"

to stop this from happening they build levees around each tank so if a spill or fire does occur it is contained to that one tank, each tank also has a floating roof to prevent lightning from starting a fire. Even when a tanker comes to unload crude the vapors from the crude is pumped to a flare while it is unloading, so its pretty much a safe operation. Most fires start because of faulty pumps when they start to go bad they can leak and can burst into flames.

I would be cautious about searching certain addresses on google maps...surveillance authorities have some way of putting a check mark next to the IP address of computers that search things such as nuclear power plants, schools, etc.

Good point. Too late dudes!

Anyway. From what (was it admin?) who used to say, apparently it's vice versa too - *their* IP's come over *here*. They've got our IP's we've got theirs. Not that I think it all matters very much in the grand scheme of things ...

I have assumed since 9/11 that subliminal New McCarthyism would get plenty of funding for a very long time. This means I have assumed I am being recorded all the time and that these records may be used against me at some future date. Therefore I never advocate violence. I never attack anyone on the basis of color, creed, or religion. I assume I am living under a democracy as far as those who would be interrogating me are concerned; so I also assume a right to free speech including on Governmental issues.

I would say you're pretty safe living in the Philippines, and being an Australian citizen. You said you have US citizenship too, but I don't think you plan on ever moving back?

As for me, I don't advocate violence anyway.

But things are starting to get a bit tricky.. I read an article the other day about a guy who has been arrested for tweeting police locations during the Pittsburgh protests. That really caught my attention.. I don't think even freaking IRAN has cracked down on the people who tweeted during their protests.

And how bizarre it is, that we elevated the Iranian tweeters to hero status, and now we're arresting our own tweeters under the same circumstances.

This is bad mojo here.. for national security reasons, we can't even protest any more! Not even from home using freaking twitter! It's just unbelievable, arrested for using twitter. Twitter's a goldmine for data mining anyhow, sheesh, they could use that to round up all sorts of malcontents.

My county (Pierce) is offering disaster response/FEMA training for free. Topics include, First Aid, Law Enforcement, Damage Assessment, etc. They are trying to get citizen teams able to respond and help during natural disasters like earthquakes, Tsunamis, etc.

I'm thinking there could be some advantages to being on one of thees teams.
