That giant sucking sound — the sound of natural gas being sucked out of Colorado’s wells, through its processing plants and off to markets in other states — just got louder.
The Rockies Express pipeline, the massive $6.7 billion project to pay 1,679 miles of pipe from western Colorado to eastern Ohio, has been completed. The pipeline started shipping natural gas along its entire length late last week, according to a Nov. 12 announcement from Kinder Morgan Energy Partners LP (NYSE: KMP) in Houston.
Kinder Morgan owns 50 percent of the pipeline, with the pipeline unit of San Diego-based Sempra Energy (NYSE: SRE) owning an additional 25 percent and ConocoPhillips owning the remaining 25 percent.
The pipeline, the biggest built in the United States in 25 years, can move 1.8 billion cubic feet of natural gas a day — enough to supply the average daily use of 4.1 million homes, according to Kinder Morgan.
