UPS /quotes/comstock/13*!ups/quotes/nls/ups (UPS 57.45, -0.06, -0.10%) shares shed 0.5% to $57.23, capturing attention after the company said it will hike its rates for delivery of packages by ground by about 4.9% in 2010. It will also implement a net increase of 4.9% on its air express and international shipments originating from the United States. The higher prices will take effect Jan. 4.

Is it still inflation if the number of packages shipped drops by more than the rate increase?

that would be a good number to get, actual shipping volume, # of packages & the tonnage shipped.

anyway, yes it's inflation. i think people sometimes use the term "Stagflation" to describe the combination of price rises & economic contraction.
