Scottish invention promises power revolution

A radical new design of electrical generator that solves an engineering quandary and promises to be cheaper, lighter and more reliable than anything currently available has been unveiled by scientists at the University of Edinburgh.

The work by Markus Mueller and Alasdair McDonald at the university’s Institute of Energy Systems has solved one of the fundamental engineering problems faced by builders of offshore wind turbines.

Now if only the Scottish can invent something, like transparent aluminum, we'll be set!

Derek Douglas, an entrepreneur specialising in raising finance for start-up companies, has joined NGenTec with the aim of raising £4 million to prove that a 6MW generator would work and then a further £10 million to set up an assembly and manufacturing operation.

Anyone With 4 million pounds or $6,646,903 USD laying around should contact these guys right away.

From Wikipedia
To create transparent aluminium, more power than is used by an entire city had to be focused into a dot with a diameter of less than one-twentieth of a thickness of a human hair, and then could only maintain the transparent state for 40 femtoseconds.

Oh yeah that sounds real freaking useful

I dunno about Glenlivet whiskey but I have been to (and sampled the Bushmills in Ireland). I cracked open a bottle when they strung up Saddam Hussein on a rope.

Fantastick invention. Ehm, may I ask numbers? The text is full of superlatives, but I'd like to hear it quantified.
This is probably just another tiny step forward.

Kinda ironic that you toasted Saddam's murder in one of England's last colonial outposts. Long live King Billy!!

Scotty, I need more power! hahahhahahaha

Seriously now, somebody has any specs on that gizmo ? I wanna know what are the differences between this model and the classic ones.

Antidoomer , do you know why they call them classic generators? because they are robust, reliable and easy to build. There are a lot of power generator models, but as any engineer knows, you have to stick to the classic designs most of the time.

The prototype would be 6MW according to the report in the link. This is towards the top end of generating power for offshore turbines I believe.

Someone suggested transparent aluminium - that could be a minor hazard for shipping and low flying aircraft... would certainly understand if the military objected!

Here folks we see cipi in his true BAU colours. cipi, cipi, there's only so much your straw can sip from planet earth's finite larder, dude!

On the offchance that you envision a future in cosmic mining stocks, the tightening noose of space junks asteroidal belt suggests that we may have to move beyond spacecraft to teleporting ourselves to the lush fleshpots of Amazonia!!!
