The U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects (DARPA)had a brainstorm
Why spend sqillions of taxpayers money for decades getting nothing
if one can make an open to all competition game with a milion buck prize
The project was to develop an "intelligent" driverless vehicle
no human control or instructions ,
the car had to work it out alone over real ground
competitors came from everywhere , from big unis to a dad and son team
The first competition of the DARPA Grand Challenge was held on March 13, 2004 in the Mojave Desert region of the United States,
a 150-mile (240 km) route with a variety of slopes and terrain
None finished the route. the best did barely a tenth of the distance
The second competition of the Grand Challenge was on October 8, 2005.
Five vehicles successfully completed the race ,

The course was a 96 km (60-mile) urban area course, to be completed in less than 6 hours.
Rules included obeying all traffic regulations while negotiating with other traffic and obstacles and merging into traffic.
the judges had really made it hard , pedestrians crossing anywhere , boom gate closing and other vehicle rear parking suddenly
six cars made it
