Peak Moment 155: Peak Oil: Adapting for Big Changes Ahead

With a long-time eye to declining energy resources, Bart Anderson envisions a very different society in five years. The former editor of www.EnergyBulletin.net offers advice for post-oil living: Understand the problem. Prepare psychologically for big shifts and the unexpected. Find your niche and get good at it. See what your great grandparents did as a model for living well within limits. "Live poor and learn to do it well" as Bart did as a graduate student. Things will be very different, he said, but we'll make it through.

PO doomerism is just a juvenile fantasy!

Have no fear. We shall crush the coruncopians. We shall drive them before us, and hear the lamentation of their women.
The whole of human history is a refutation by experiment of the concept of "moral world order". - Friedrich Nietzsche

...not necessarily the Singularity. But I definitely believe that machine intelligence is on the way.

The military is all over it. They have no doubts.

I see more of a Dune scenario. The military by necessity will have
to begin rationing the rest of us with PO.

That doesn't mean that quantifying them still isn't a good idea. What do you think the "mine Helium3 from the moon" people do in their spare time? :-D

What is a good idea about quantifying nonsense?

Don't just say something is nonsense, show it is. Besides, if you think your position is nonsense or juvenile, why would you even bother presenting it?

.

The U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects (DARPA)had a brainstorm

Why spend sqillions of taxpayers money for decades getting nothing
if one can make an open to all competition game with a milion buck prize
The project was to develop an "intelligent" driverless vehicle

no human control or instructions ,
the car had to work it out alone over real ground

competitors came from everywhere , from big unis to a dad and son team

The first competition of the DARPA Grand Challenge was held on March 13, 2004 in the Mojave Desert region of the United States,
a 150-mile (240 km) route with a variety of slopes and terrain
None finished the route. the best did barely a tenth of the distance

The second competition of the Grand Challenge was on October 8, 2005.
Five vehicles successfully completed the race ,

The third competition of the Grand Challenge2, the "Urban Challenge", was on November 3, 2007
The course was a 96 km (60-mile) urban area course, to be completed in less than 6 hours.
Rules included obeying all traffic regulations while negotiating with other traffic and obstacles and merging into traffic.

the judges had really made it hard , pedestrians crossing anywhere , boom gate closing and other vehicle rear parking suddenly

six cars made it

Intelligence is not about thoughts it's about functions ,

I can't say I disagree, even if it is for different reasons. :-D
