More than 30% of the American South is obese

An update on our collective waistline: The Trust for America's Health has a new report out, with the blunt title "F as in Fat," and the news isn't good. The map above shows America's obesity rates state by state. They hover in the 25 to 30 percent range. To put that in perspective, in 1991, no state had an obesity rate higher than 20 percent.

The report also notes the relationship between income and weight: "35.3 percent of adults earning less than $15,000 per year were obese compared with 24.5 percent of adults earning $50,000 or more per year." Part of the problem there is that a salad costs more than a Big Mac.

Hm, that's pretty stunning.. since 1991, in 8 states obesity has gone up by a full 33%, while in 31 states obesity has gone up by 25%. 8O

What is a definition of obesity as per OP?
30>BMI>25? (overweight)
35>BMI>30? (slightly obese)
BMI>35? (very obese)

Probably this:

Obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have an adverse effect on health, leading to reduced life expectancy and/or increased health problems.[1][2] Body mass index (BMI), a measurement which compares weight and height, defines people as overweight (pre-obese) when their BMI is between 25 kg/m2 and 30 kg/m2, and obese when it is greater than 30 kg/m2.

But I'm not sure if the data graphic in my OP uses these numbers. Probably safe to say though that whatever their definition of "obese" is, it's fatter than what people ought to be. Even overweight is not healthy, after all.

EDIT: Here's a link to the original report, it's probably in there somewhere:

Also saw their map for childhood obesity, pretty sad so many CHILDREN are obese:
