Governments have pretty much always poked and sniffed around almost every sort of opposition or
major activity of domestic life according to their ability to do so, which is of course increasing in
the modern era. Being from Russia, you should be aware that it is not the snooping which is so bad,
it is what the state does based on the information they obtain.

On that point, I would much rather be an American than Russian or Chinese citizen on an open
ended basis.

I am heartened to see that your nation is improving, as you are able to freely post on western
forums without fearing for your life or liberty (I hope).

According to an article published in Der Spiegel magazine this month, a German military think tank report strategically leaked online warns that peak oil will occur soon "and that the impact on security is expected to be felt 15 to 30 years later". Peak oil, according to the report, could threaten democracy, creating "room for ideological and extremist alternatives to existing forms of government".
