McDonald's, 29 other firms get health care coverage waivers

Unread postby Sixstrings » Thu 07 Oct 2010, 18:50:57

Nearly a million workers won't get a consumer protection in the U.S. health reform law meant to cap insurance costs because the government exempted their employers.

Thirty companies and organizations, including McDonald's (MCD) and Jack in the Box (JACK), won't be required to raise the minimum annual benefit included in low-cost health plans, which are often used to cover part-time or low-wage employees.

The Department of Health and Human Services, which provided a list of exemptions, said it granted waivers in late September so workers with such plans wouldn't lose coverage from employers who might choose instead to drop health insurance altogether.

Without waivers, companies would have had to provide a minimum of $750,000 in coverage next year, increasing to $1.25 million in 2012, $2 million in 2013 and unlimited in 2014.

Um, so what's this, the White House is rescinding "Health Care Reform" before the Republicans get a chance to? Looks like any company who threatens to drop coverage altogether can just get a waiver.

If this is supposedly a good law, then why is the White House picking and choosing who gets to be exempt? And worse is the unfairness of it; maybe Mcdonalds Corp. can get an exemption, but can you?

Because the law actually sucks?

My guess is that it is a politically motivated move. They don't want the Republicans to have any more talking points than they do. They looked at the polls and figured they (Dems) would take the blame, so they caved.

Just an idea.

I can agree with Ludi on this, but probably not for the same reasons.

It amuses me how much the left complains about right wing economics. Then you have this.

Unlimited medical coverage, strictly regulated premiums (which will become a better value over time due to the cost savings / efficiency of this plan), and providing health care for 30-odd million people who can't afford it. And this will of course, help us balance the budget over time -- AND improve the quality of health care AND let you keep the plan you have according to the promises this administration made.

This is just as ludicrous as a right wing religious rant about how there is no evolution.
Given the track record of the perma-doomer blogs, I wouldn't bet a fast crash doomer's money on their predictions.
