Yes, Green Jobs Are Real

In researching for my series on jobs in renewable energy in the U.S., I turned up some very interesting information. First, it’s clear that clean energy is creating jobs. In 2010, the solar industry created 50,00 jobs according to the first ever national solar jobs census that was conducted by The Solar Foundation, Green LMI, Cornell University and others. In total there are 93,000 people employed in the solar industry right now.

The geothermal industry, too, is ramping up hard. As a whole, the industry expects to add almost 3000 jobs next year. For the past year and a half or so geothermal project developers have been finding lands to lease, collecting permits, arranging financing and generally getting their ducks in a row so that the real work of developing geothermal energy projects could begin. Now, in 2011, it is set to start.

They hydro energy industry – the largest of the renewables – accounts for 200,000 to 300,000 workers right now and could grow to millions should the U.S. adopt a strong renewable electricity standard, according to Navigant Consulting.

I have two years of experience as an engineer and I've been trying to get work in this field. It is very clear to me that there are far more job seekers than there are jobs, even in this field. Most of the engineering positions I've seen advertised for this field involve management positions for those with 8-10+ years experience, PE license, ect. It seems as if much of the design, manufacture, and fabrication of RE systems is being done overseas in places where the pay is lower.

2011 Outlook for Clean Energy Jobs in the U.S. – Beating the Trend

In this second part of our series, we examine how the enormous growth of clean energy installations in the U.S. is creating jobs and putting Americans back to work.

Solar Power

The solar power industry doubled the number of people that worked in the industry from 2009 to 2010, from approximately 50,000 in 2009 to 100,000 in 2010, according to the latest reports. In 2011, it is expected to grow the number of jobs in the industry by 26%. “You’d be hard pressed to find another industry with a 26 percent job growth rate for 2011,” said Rhone Resch, president of the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA).

In terms of bioenergy and biobased products, the U.S. is expected to lead the world in global development according to a report form the World Economic Forum released earlier this year. In the report, data provided by the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO), shows that as of June 2010, the biorefinery industry accounted for more than 40,000 jobs in the U.S. The commercialization of second and third generation biofuels is expected to create 800,000 new jobs (190,000 direct new green jobs, and 610,000 indirect new jobs) in the U.S. by 2022. Achieving the biorefining industry’s full potential could create tens of thousands more new jobs within the next five years, said the report.
