Its Qantas thats killing us

Unread postby Adelaidewonderer » Wed 16 Feb 2011, 08:11:26

Qantas’s fuel bill is expected to jump from $3.7 billion Australian in 2011 before hitting $4.4 billion in 2012, according to experts
.

My god, I cant believe exactly how much Qantas actually consumes as a percentage of Australia's oil use. I know that Qantas refuels alot overseas, but as alot of its flights are domestic and or originate in australia, then I think we all get a fair idea of its fuel usage. A bill of $4.4 Billion at the current rate of about $115 (taking that 2011 are probably hedged at 2010 prices and 2012 at 2011 prices)for a barrel of kerosene equates to approx. 38,260,869 barrels a year /365 = 104,824 barrels a day. Australia currently only consumes approx. 1 million barrels a day, so qantas is accounting for about 10% of our fuel use.

Boy, wont the world become much bigger on the downslope of oil supply.

Except that jet fuel was $167.20 average spot price last year. Also worthy of consideration is that many of the millions of passenger miles would have been driven solo if no flight were available, roughly tripling the carbon ppm figures. This would be offset by discretionary travel. Another point is this includes Jetstar figures in the total, the fastest growing airline in SE Asia.

You must be buying your jet fuel from the wrong places / or your crude oil from the very right places.

Nope, beg to differ there. The businessman who flys regularly from perth to sydney or melbourne would not have driven otherwise. He probably would be more inclined to do it all via video phone. Same with many sydney-melbourne trips. And I feel pretty assured that your sydney to san francisco or london tripper would not have been too inclined to drive.

I say we just close the airlines down for good.

Roughly 133 thousand million passenger kiliometers not including freight. (2009)
133 billion divided by (your figures) 4.4 billion equals 30,22 km travel per dollar.
Even Xeno can't drive his Prius that cheap!

It just goes from bad to worse. The site you refer to actually states 97488 million passenger kilometres flown. The site provides 3 tables. Total flown (and then breaks it down into international and domestic). You have taken the total, and then added on the domestic (which was already in the total) thus 97/4.4 = 22km per dollar.

You average medium car, carrying 4 people, and doing 8 litres (@$1.30 per litre) per 100 km would use 80 litres ($104) on a 1000 kilomtre trip (4000 passenger kilomtres) . That would equate to 38 kilomtres per dollar.

Nope, I added total international and domestic, at least I though I did. Go stand along the Hume Highway sometime and count how many vehicles are single occupant, my guess would be 80%.
Really I would rather we had a super duper bicycle track system in Australia, lots of free ports for small yachts, just sail and bike around. But it doesn't matter much what i want, the planes will keep flying and cars driving for the forseeable. Sooner or later PO will change all that.
