Civilisation or civil society is a function of humanities' unique set of circumstances. Whether it be at its most rudimentary, the primitive communism of tribal societies or its most elaborate, the individualised modernity of capitalism, there will always be a greater or lesser element of the civilising to all that we do as a sentient species, acting with co-ordinated intent.

What we therefore confront in capitalism is a modernity that is inherently terminal. A modernity with a resourcing profile that does not match it's value profile. Had we instead chosen a steadier state of modernity, I suspect eco-shock would be less of an issue.
