Japanese television has shown major tsunami damage in northern Japan on Friday, following an earthquake that has been upgraded to 8.8.

Public broadcaster NHK showed cars, trucks, houses and buildings being swept away by the tsunami in Onahama city in Fukushima prefecture.

Scores of cars were seen floating in Iwate prefecture harbour, local TV said.

http://news.smh.com.au/breaking-news-world/japan-issues-top-tsunami-warning-after-massive-quake-20110311-1br0z.html

Japan issued its top tsunami warning after a massive 8.8 magnitude offshore quake on Friday, with reports of 'numerous' injuries and ships being washed ashore by waves.

The US Geological Survey upgraded the quake to 8.8 from 7.9.

What's that mean? All that chatter about March 15? 8O

CNN says upgraded 8.9 which makes it ten times worse than an 8.8 (Chile quake).

I just looked up biggest quakes in history on Wikipedia.. from what I see this 8.9 would be the largest known in history (since 1900 anyway). Next on the list was the Chile quake and then an 8.8 in 1906:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_20th-century_earthquakes

Wow.. MSNBC is showing video of a 13 foot tsunami approaching the coast, I assume Japan. It's massive, a wall of white caps. If one is headed for Guam and Hawaii, they have a couple hours to get out of the way.

Tsunami hit the beach but didn't go far.. amazing video though, wall of water as far as the helicopter camera can see. This video must be a secondary wave, they're showing the tsunami damage footage now.

EDIT: correction, the above link is 20th century earthquakes I guess this is like the 4th largest.. I forgot how rocky the 21st century has been so far..

UPDATE, tsunami was 33 feet tall:

A 33ft wave has smashed into the port in the country's Sendai city, sending ships crashing into the shore and carrying cars and buildings through the streets of coastal towns.

Deaths have been reported following the earthquake, which has obliterated Tokyo's Disneyland car park and caused a large fire at an oil refinery in nearby Iichihara.

Large aftershocks continue to hit the capital, following a quake so strong it was felt 1,500 miles away in the Chinese capital of Beijing.

USGS now calling it one of the great quakes of history. According to MSNBC Tsunami warning now extended for the entire Pacific including the US west coast, Alaska, Australia. Other sources seem to leave out the West Coast and Alaska or have Alaska under a watch so I don't know:

The US tsunami monitoring center on Friday widened a warning to virtually the entire Pacific coast, including Australia and South America, after a massive earthquake in Japan.

Japanese PM just gave a short press conference. Didn't say much other than there's no evidence of nuclear material being released yet (sounds like a nuke plant may have gotten swamped).

Nuke plants shut down anyway, millions without electricity:

Nuclear plants on the Pacific coast in Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures have been automatically shut down Friday following a powerful earthquake that hit a wide area in northeastern Japan, the operators said.

There were no immediate reports from monitoring posts of fires or other abnormalities near the nuclear plants after the 2:46 p.m. quake, the industry ministry said.

EDIT: Reporter on Fox News saying IF a tsunami reaches California it will hit at 5am.

Ok, anyone who isn't asleep on the west coast already knows this but.. you might want to get inland, to be on the safe side.

There's talk on tickerforum that this could even affect the east coast (sounds highly unlikely to me, but throwing it out there anyway):
http://tickerforum.org/akcs-www?post=182060&page=7

Seismologist on Fox is guessing maybe around 4 or 5 foot tsunami for Cali. He also said when quakes are this big, they don't really know how strong they are since the instrumentation breaks down.

1964 Anchorage Alaska Earthquake was 9.2

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii has widened its tsunami warning to include Hawaii and the rest of the Pacific Ocean.

Sirens were sounded in Honolulu shortly after the warning was issued Thursday at 9:31 HST p.m.

The warning follows a massive earthquake that has struck off the northeastern coast of Japan. It says the estimated earliest arrival in Hawaii of the first tsunami wave is 2:59 a.m. HST Friday.

Thats 4 hrs from now.

I know Fox forgets that Hawaii is part of the United States. They think it's part of Kenya.

Supposed to hit the Washington Coast at 0705 PST. They are not sure how large it will be yet. The tides will be receding at that time.

Here are the largest magnitude earthquakes in history, according to the USGS website:

-- 9.5, Chile, May 5, 1960. A quake off the coast of southern Chile killed more than 1,600 people and left 2,000,000 homeless.

-- 9.2, Alaska, United States, March 27, 1964. A quake and tsunami killed 128 people and caused severe damage to the state's largest city Anchorage.

-- 9.1, Indonesia, December 26, 2004. An undersea quake caused a massive tsunami that devastated coastlines in countries around the Indian Ocean, ultimately killing more than 220,000 people.

-- 9.0, Russia, November 4, 1952. A quake off the coast of the remote Kamchatka peninsula in Russia's far east caused Pacific-wide tsunamis.

-- 9.0, Peru, August 13, 1868. The port of Arica, which is now part of Chile, was hit by a quake felt up to 1,400 kilometres (870 miles) away.

-- 9.0, North America, January 26, 1700. A quake affecting 1,000 kilometres of coastline set off a tsunami that crossed the Pacific Ocean and caused damage to coastal villages in Japan.

-- 8.9, Japan, March 11, 2011. An undersea quake off northeast Japan unleashed a 10-metre-high tsunami which left devastation in its wake.

-- 8.8, Chilean coast, February 27, 2010. An offshore quake and tsunami killed more than 500 people, most in the coastal area of Maule, 400 kilometres (250 miles) south-west of the capital Santiago.

-- 8.8, Ecuador, January 31, 1906. A quake struck off the coast of Ecuador and Colombia and was felt as far away as San Francisco.

-- 8.7, Alaska, February 4, 1965. A quake in the remote Rat Islands generated a tsunami reported to be 10 metres high.

-- 8.7, Portugal, November 1, 1755. The capital Lisbon was struck by a quake while many residents were in church. A quarter of the city's population perished.

-- 8.7, Chile, July 8, 1730. A quake hit the city of Valparaiso, 120 kilometres northwest of the capital Santiago, causing a tsunami which hit more than 1,000 kilometres of coastline.

Another snippet from the BBC

Japan has declared a state of emergency because of the failure of the cooling system at one nuclear plant, according to the Associated Press. Officials say there has been no leak of radiation.

BBC ran press conference in which they said they couldn't get the the reactor shut down 'as planned' and that there is no leakage 'at this point'. Can't get the generator running to pump the water for the cool down. How long till they're in real trouble if they can't cool down? (I live 40 miles from TMI and I remember those early announcements.
