"By December, Souza was able to replace the motorcycle engine's kickstarter with a car ignition, and add in a gearbox with reverse. The mostly Fiat shrimpmobile can reach 50 mph on the highway, and Souza has been able to use it to find a home and a job in the local sugarcane fields.

Souza says his next goal will be to save enough money to have a garage for his creation. We wouldn't bet against him."

such motivation & innovation used to be quite common in America. it still happens, just not as often.

Our U.S. regulations make it tough for many of the poor to own cars.

I recently offered a free car to a poor relative, but they had no on-street, or off-street parking, plus couldn't afford the cost of registration, inspection, insurance, maintenance, repairs, 4 new tires, parking tickets, towing/impound fees, gas, oil etc.

If they wanted to build a garage for a vehicle, the cost of land, permits, surveys, variances, materials, professional labor and increased assessments/property taxes would make it financially impossible for many employment/income/credit challenged residents.

It just happens to be against the law in America. Nobody is allowed to compete with GM (Government Motors). You can't even build a tool shed in America without government interference because the bankers and real estate swindlers will want a piece of the pie. Government regulation exists to keep the little guys down so they don't threaten the big business oligarchs or the banks.

I built my own car and drove it for 2 years. What's the problem? It got the equivalent of 200 miles per gallon, and when it ran out of energy all I had to do is park it facing the sun and come back in an hour.
