Gas Prices: Californians Are Mad as Hell but Still Driving

Unread postby mattduke » Fri 29 Apr 2011, 20:29:27

Even if drivers say they're not drastically altering their gas-buying habits, some gas stations are noticing a big difference. "We're selling 3,000 gallons less a day," says Gabriel Cortez, manager of a 76 station in Beverly Hills with middle-of-the-road prices. The current price increase is the most significant one Cortez can remember in 31 years working at this station, and he's fearful it may cause irreparable damage to the business. "The owner is getting nervous," Cortez says. "This is a disaster."

If the price of gasoline and other oil based products increases, many people will be forced to buy less of other things. This puts downward pressure on prices of these other things. The drag of huge debts which siphons purchasing power out of the economy, and the price pressure of oil which also siphons purchasing power out of the economy does not bode well for a recovery from the current depressed economy.

Disintegration of the industrial age is happening before our eyes.

One of the fringe benefits of living in MA is I don't have to deal with the high gas taxes that I did in CA. I remember when I first moved back here in 2008 and gas was like 25-30c cheaper than the west-coast. It really put some perspective on my doom-o-meter. I would be freaking out a lot more if I still lived in SoCal.
