6th Amendment Repealed

Unread postby Pops » Fri 05 Aug 2011, 10:40:18

The existence of the million-dollar donation — as gleaned from campaign and corporate records obtained by NBC News — provides a vivid example of how secret campaign cash is being funneled in ever more circuitous ways into the political system.
The company, W Spann LLC, was formed in March by a Boston lawyer who specializes in estate tax planning for “high net worth individuals,” according to corporate records and the lawyer’s bio on her firm’s website.
The corporate records provide no information about the owner of the firm, its address or its type of business.
Six weeks later, W Spann LLC made its million-dollar donation to Restore Our Future — a new so-called “super PAC” started by a group of former Romney political aides to boost the former Massachusetts governor’s presidential bid. It listed its address as being in a midtown Manhattan office building that has no record of such a tenant.

I forgot the best part:
A mystery company that pumped $1 million into a political committee backing Mitt Romney has been dissolved just months after it was formed, leaving few clues as to who was behind one of the biggest contributions yet of the 2012 presidential campaign.

Gotta hand it to the folks who paid to get old W re-elected, moving the center of the SCOTUS past the right fringe all the way into corporate ownership territory was a good investment.

Double-plus-good

The legitimate object of government, is to do for a community of people, whatever they need to have done, but can not do, at all, or can not, so well do, for themselves -- in their separate, and individual capacities.

They really ought to just dispense with the charade and remove all campaign finance restrictions, already. The rich own the system and nearly all of the politicians, but the artifice keep the wool pulled over most people's eyes.

Anyone who isn't a millionaire or a billionaire who contributes to ANY campaign is just throwing their money away.

So I wonder what exactly the current state of the law is. Far as I know there are still restrictions on individuals.. yet if an individual incorporates a shell LLC all by himself or with some pals or heck even some foreign potentate then the CORPORATION can contribute whatever it wants.

It sure is bizarre, no reason to favor shell corps. Would make more sense to remove all restrictions, as you said.

To be fair and balanced though..

Are $70,000 per couple birthday tickets much different? Also they've had rather secretive fundraisers. Biden had one where they didn't want any of the donors to be seen, the local Orlando reporter was locked in the closet until the rich had all cleared out.

Then there was a fundraiser where a journalist taped a protest, and the WH threatened the Hearst chain with revoking pool privileges.

It stinks all around. Maybe it's time to cut to the chase and incorporate the federal government.. appoint a Board, let them find a CEO.

Really.

The point isn't that the money went to Romney, the point is this is a sham to get around the disclosure laws - Romney knows who he's on the hook to but the public does not.

Which is the problem (and purpose) of the citizens united case, run attack ads with NO "by line"

Romney's people may not know. Don't go lookin' for trouble and all that.. no reason for them to dig into it.

To be fair though Pops you surely have to admit Dem pols aren't angels either. Remember the Clinton years, those Chinese fundraisers in the WH were shameful. Lincoln bedroom rented out, all that.

$70,000 birthday tickets.. that's not chump change. Get fourteen birthday couples together and that amounts to the same as the million dollar shell corp.

Just being fair here, but I agree with you the shell corp stuff and SCOTUS decision sucks.

(p.s. I was being sarcastic about incorporating the federal government)
