I will have to agree with this, the media has not only over hyped Irene they also over hype other news as well, even here in Vegas as of lately when our temps get above 105 degrees the local news now shows red tickers on bottom saying excessive heat wave, we are always above 105 during our summer months, why is it now excessive when in the past it was normal ?

I also still like the Red Alert tickers on the bottom of major media they show almost all the time over the most stupidest news, they also use the words, Scare and other over the top hype words.

What an infantile response on so many levels. The most obvious of which is that there is access today to more raw information and expert analysis on weather than ever before and some want to blame some talking head. How about taking some personal responsibility ? And, these same people expect whoever it is they decide to listen to to be right all the time whether it be the media, politicians or some hot weather babe. Idiotic.

Personally, I get my over-hyped weather from Jackie. I don't know what she's saying, but it makes me want to be prepared.

It used to be hurricane reporting was just showing the aftermath.

Like these from our local news site.

We got hit hardly at all. I was out on the porch during the worst of it watching the sycamore that grows near my power line. It looked rock solid. Not everyone's trees had good roots.

I think in the long run it is counter-productive to cry wolf too many times. I know if ever I am
on the east coast, I'll make my own decisions. I would hate for Gov Christy to take the dozen
donuts out of his jowls to force me to evacuate! Both Christy and Bloomberg are presidential
wannabes, and they tried to look "presidential".

There was enough panic over the recent Virginia earthquake that CNN was actually calling for calm.

The first few minutes after the event they were fanning the flames. Apparently the reactions on the street were so severe that somebody called off the dogs.

I was very surprised. It takes very high level pressure to get our American media to call for calm amidst a hot story, and that story was hot indeed.
Stop filling dumpsters, as much as you possibly can, and everything will get better.

Just think it through.
It's not hard to do.

I flatly refuse to watch 99% of such over-hyped news events, as a matter of principle (and I have better ways to waste my time).

I can only hope there is similar enough behavior from the Neilson families that the advertisers figure out that this nonsense may actually backfire.

Virtually EVERY media outlet that was considering itself SOME kind of a news source just hijacked all planned discussions / shows - to focus on the weather" from Sometime Friday on.

And EVERYTHING that can call itself REMOTELY something like a crisis (or an interesting story with broad appeal) causes this in recent years.

I for one, hope they lose so much money that they'll be incented to STOP IT.

(And by the way, in about 90 seconds on the internet, you can get better and more balanced coverage from multiple sources -- than you can get from an hour of the nonsense thrown at you by the Cable News channels and their ilk on TV).
Given the track record of the perma-doomer blogs, I wouldn't bet a fast crash doomer's money on their predictions.

It is times like these that I am glad I threw my TEEVEE in the trash years ago. This should have been an easy call for the weathermen. Hurricane + Cold front doesn't mix and it turns into a non event every time. Media hyped this one up purpose with government collusion. I call conspiracy on this one. Millions evacuated for no reason and I bet more people died in car accidents the previous day than died in the storm.
