LONGVIEW, Wash. (AP) — Hundreds of Longshoremen stormed the Port of Longview early Thursday, overpowered and held security guards, damaged railroad cars, and dumped grain that is the center of a labor dispute, said Longview Police Chief Jim Duscha.

Six guards were held hostage for a couple of hours after 500 or more Longshoremen broke down gates about 4:30 a.m. and smashed windows in the guard shack, he said.

No one was hurt, and nobody has been arrested. Most of the protesters returned to their union hall after cutting brake lines and spilling grain from car at the EGT terminal, Duscha said.

The International Longshore and Warehouse Union believes it has the right to work at the facility, but the company has hired a contractor that's staffing a workforce of other union laborers.

Thursday's violence was first reported by Kelso radio station KLOG.

Police from several agencies in southwest Washington, the Washington State Patrol and Burlington Northern Santa Fe responded to the violence to secure the scene that followed a demonstration Wednesday.

"We're not surprised," Duscha said. "A lot of the protesters were telling us this in only the start."

One sergeant was threatened with baseball bats and retreated, Duscha said. "One officer with hundreds of Longshoremen? He used the better part of discretion."

I've read about this kind of thing going on in France, where the workers hold management "hostage" as part of the protest. Never heard of this in the US though.

I wonder how these guys will be prosecuted? If they're charged and convicted on hostage-taking, yikes they could be looking at 30 years in prison.

Obama and Hoffa get together and rant and rave and make threats, and the next thing you know mobs of folks are out there committing crimes like trespass, destruction of private property and kidnapping.

Its hard to remember that just three years ago Obama was portraying himself as someone who wanted to bring people together.

The Republicans just gained another 100,000 undecided votes in 2012.

If it had been the Tea Party the media would have preempted the president's speech.

I've been watching Fox and CNN almost all day, and haven't heard this. I'm thinking they are
trying to keep this tamped down.

Shocking (not really) :|

Right now the average ceo is earning 262 times that of an average worker who's struggling to put food on the table. I think this trickle down piss on the poor economics is bound to start pissing workers off.

Yeah, Xe aka "the mercenaries formerly known as Prince Blackwater" may play the roll of the Pinkertons.

As they say, nothing changes until the guillotines come out and not one second sooner.

Let the good times roll. Image

Longshoremen in Tacoma, Seattle, and Everett did not show up to work today in support. The Longview Union President was arrested yesterday.

Wow. I believe I have the right to work at the Playboy Mansion. Get out of the way Hefner or I'll bash your head in.

Hopefully, the destruction of the unions will pick up steam now and we can consign them to the ash heap of history where they belong.

By Kari Lydersen

Tomorrow, August 30, a rule will be published in the federal register that mandates that almost all private employers must post a notice informing employees of their rights to organize under the National Labor Relations Act.

The decision, announced last week by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), applies to companies whether or not they have federal contracts. Currently, under an executive order signed by President Obama in January 2009, federal contractors are required to post an 11x17 inch notice outlining workers' rights to:

Self-organization, to form, join, or assist labor organizations; to bargain collectively; to engage in other concerted activities; and to refrain from such activities.

Business groups stridently objected to the rule, which was originally proposed in December 2010 and received about 7,000 comments during a public comment period. Many business interests argued the NLRB doesn't have the statutory authority to make such a rule. In text of the rule including background and supplementary material, the NLRB cites case law showing it does have the needed authority.

The Huffington Post reported:

Business groups and their allies are furious. They say that the rule is too onerous, and that it benefits labor unions. The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), a powerful small-business trade group known to support Republicans, quickly pounced on the "punitive new rule" as another assault by the National Labor Relations Board on independent employers.

A statement from the NFIB said:

The same week the Obama Administration announced it was making an effort to scale back burdensome rules on small businesses, the NLRB … demonstrated an unprecedented overreach of its authority today by issuing a punitive new rule…

Women working for Playboy should have the right to unionize. Collectively bargain for health care, workplace safety, fair pay for the demeaning and psychologically destructive work they do. Maybe a pension for when they're too old to work there anymore, oh 25 or 30 years old.

And they should have every right to go on strike. Hef derives his income from THEM, the girls have a right to deny him that income if he won't treat them right.

And who will perform this killing? Those government employees (the police) you consistently profess such hatred for?
