Power outage in San Diego, "connections severed"

SDG&E: "Power Out Into the Night"

Communities across San Diego went dark on Thursday afternoon as a power outage plagued parts of the county. Southern parts of Orange County, Coachella Valley, eastern San Diego and northern Mexico are experiencing outages as well.

More than 1.4 million SDG&E customers are without power, with millions affected by the outage. All other service providers have power.
An SDG&E official just stated, "We expect power to be out well into the night and into tomorrow in some areas."

An event happened between Arizona and California to cause both major connections to the region to lose connection. Major connectors in the region have been severed, causing the outage. The extreme heat in some areas also may have caused some problems with the lines, according to SDG&E.

"Essentially we have two connections from the rest of the world: One of from the north and one is to the east. Both connections are severed," said the SDG&E official.

California Independent System Operator is helping to bring power back on. The mayor's office is asking people to stay off roads and do not use land line phones.

The FBI and SDG&E officials said the power outage is not related to the terror threat.

Well this is weird. What do they mean by "an event happened." What could possibly "sever the connections?"

earthquake? landslide?
"That really annoying person you know, the one who's always spouting bullshit, the person who always thinks they're right?
Well, the odds are that for somebody else, you're that person.
So take the amount you think you know, reduce it by 99.999%, and then you'll have an idea of how much you actually know..."

Maybe it has something to do with solar flares?

And nowhere else? Not likely. Beside, solar flares don't "severe" lines.

Doom canceled..

They're saying a power company employee in Arizona screwed up while doing maintenance, knocked out San Diego and Tijuana, other parts of Mexico:

Power cut for sweltering US Southwest, Mexico

SAN DIEGO (AP) — A major power outage knocked out electricity to more than 2 million people in California, Arizona and Mexico on Thursday, bringing San Diego and Tijuana to a standstill and leaving people sweltering in the late-summer heat in the surrounding desert.
Two nuclear reactors were offline after losing electricity, but officials said there was no danger to the public or workers.

..

The outage was likely caused by an employee carrying out a procedure at a power substation in southwest Arizona and should have been limited to the Yuma area, power officials in Arizona said in a press release. The power company, Arizona Public Service, didn't immediately explain the procedure and were investigating why the outage wasn't contained.

Not sure I'd want to be in Tijuana, all night, without power. 8O Border control is still up, running on backup power. San Diego should get power back some time tomorrow.

It doesn't take much of an event to cut power off to millions. Remember the squirrel who caused the northeast to black out in 2004? All these grids are tied together now. They start to fail and it cascades.

Here's the article on the blackout again. At the end they say "god bless air conditioning". We are all one squirrel from blackout, and we could be saying "god bless heat" around here in the winter.

Says a lot about the American electrical supply system.
How the hell can you design a system that is so full of hair triggers that the simplest of things can trigger a cascading failure.

Just think what could happen if a terror group managed to find a list of trigger points and hit them all at once! [smilie=5eek.gif]

I don't think there has been a serious grid failure since 2003. Not sure where you get the impression
it is "full of hair triggers".
