KSA gets a new crown prince

Saudi Crown Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz has died, leaving his brother Prince Nayef the likely successor to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz.
Story

Woolsey from 2007:
In Saudi Arabia, if for example Prince Nayef, the interior minister, should succeed king Abdullah someday, you’d have a Saudi king who is very close to the Wahhabi and might adopt policies that would be difficult for the United States. If you look back to February '06 when al Qaeda attacked the Abqaiq production facility in Northeastern Saudi Arabia, one has to realize that had they gotten within mortar range of that facility, they could have taken out the sulfur clearing towers. Robert McFarlane, President Reagan’s National Security advisor, tells us that would take six or seven million barrels of oil a day off line for probably over a year and quite likely send oil up to $200 per barrel.

So we don’t have control over the security either of the supply or the stability of the infrastructure they way we do over our electricity grid. Now, we have some things we need to fix about our electricity grid, some vulnerabilities, but it’s within our ability to do it. We cannot re-design the Abqaiq production facility in Saudi Arabia. So that is one major reason our dependence on foreign oil is a problem.

Also this Bloomberg story...
The legitimate object of government, is to do for a community of people, whatever they need to have done, but can not do, at all, or can not, so well do, for themselves -- in their separate, and individual capacities.
-- Abraham Lincoln, Fragment on Government (July 1, 1854)

I was hoping Nayef would pass before Sultan. This could be bad. Hopefully, the king will hang on and outlast Nayef.

Trump Greets Visiting Saudi Prince

President Donald Trump welcomed Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to the Oval Office on Tuesday by showcasing photographs of tanks and helicopters that the U.S. has sold the Middle East kingdom to help it build up its military muscle. Across town, senators debating a contentious proposal meant to curb American military support for Saudi Arabia were shown a sobering image of a Yemeni toddler injured by an airstrike, one victim of Riyadh’s protracted war against Iran-backed militants. The dissonant images captured the state of relations between Washington and Riyadh as the two countries confront obstacles to their efforts to strengthen ties and agree on new steps to counter Iran. The White House meeting marked the start of Prince Mohammed’s 2½-week visit to the U.S., where he is looking to win more political, diplomatic, military and economic support from Washington.
