Write your own obituary

Unread postby Heineken » Wed 04 Jan 2012, 10:58:46

This thread is for writing your own obituary/bio. Here are the simple suggested rules. Maximum length is about 300 words. When you reach the present point in time in your life, indicate that in the obituary with three asterisks (***). Then imagine and include the remainder of your life, if you want to project how the future that is left to you plays out (that's the fun part)---and continue to use the past tense to relate it. Don't give real identities of persons, places, or organizations, obviously, unless you think they're generic enough to be safe to do so (e.g., worked for IBM in Boston, MA, from 1978 to 1985). The style, content, and slant of the obituary can be as unique as you are.

Don't post anything else, including comments about others' obituaries. Only your obituary, the way you envision it in the "paper" in the days after your death.

Just an idea. Sink it or swim with it.

You ask for obits, you get epitaphs. I was thinking of starting an epitaph thread, inspired by visiting an old cemetery.

I had lots of great funny lines suitable for carving on my stone, but, of course they don't come to mind at the moment.

If you're thinking PO, how about:

"Out of gas"

"Survived the Age of Petroleum"
Facebook knows you're a dog.

Maybe the epitaph thread is a better idea, Keith. More fun. My idea was probably too ambitious.

PJ ORourke wrote a book on etiquette back when he was funny 30 years and it included a eulogy that went something like "We don't know why God put him on this earth except maybe as a punishment to his parents. Now let's get him in the ground and hit the bars."
