This year's top ten list of scams tracked by the Better Business Bureau includes fraudsters duping victims online, so-called 'brand spoofing' and targeting vulnerable seniors.

"One 82-year old man living in a retirement community was sold a $2500 vacuum cleaner over the phone after pressure sales tactics confused him into giving his credit card number."

The bureau's Lynda Pasacreta adds other victims are fooled into believing they are being helped by criminals posing as computer repairmen, door-to-door salesmen and even locksmiths.

"Locksmith Master. On its various websites, local numbers are listed, but all are re-directed to a central switchboard based in Florida. The company also fraudulently claims to be a member of the Better Business Bureau. The addresses listed on their website often don't exist."

While many scams have been common over the past century, one of the newest involves the exploitation of people worried about the installation of B.C. Hydro's new smart meters.

They’re often tricked into spending up to $250 on falsely-advertised energy-saving devices.

PG$E, California’s Utility Monopoly, recently admitted that each smart meter transmits radiation between 10,000 & 190,000 times each day.

This corrects previous false statements repeated often by utility companies across the country.



NOTE: many of the tests on non-ionizing radiation (the type of radiation emitted by smart meters) have been done using devices other than smart meters because smart meters have only been in people’s homes for a very short time.

But as a Wireless smart meter emits 100 times more radiation than a cell phone, it is not difficult to project. If a machine gun (smart meter) fires 100 bullets in the same time that a pistol (cell phone) fires one bullet, it is not difficult to project the harm that the machine gun can do, even if the tests were done with the pistol.

The dangers of Smart meters is not unfounded. You are the one who is crazy if you think 100 times more radiation than a cell phone is good for you. I don't even trust cell phones. There has been a 300% increase in brain cancer nation wide since the 70s because of cell phone use. If these smart meters get put everywhere we would see that cancer rate go up 50 fold and people would be dying left and right.

Should hackers get their electric meter readings, the best time of day to launch an all-out attack against them might be revealed or something like that. A debate over the usefulness of smart meters versus potential security and privacy in the Illinois city of Naperville has spilled into the courts.

The group, Naperville Smart Meter Awareness Group, or NSMA, filed for an injunction in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District, Eastern Division, on Dec. 30, asking that the city’s planned installation of smart meters be halted until residents can vote on a non-binding referendum in March, the closest election.

The referendum asks residents to vote on using smart meters in their city.

“It was a difficult decision to file in federal court. We have worked tirelessly for months advocating for caution and informed consent,” said Kim Bendis, president of NSMA, a nonprofit lobbying against smart meters. “It has become clear that our city officials are no longer acting in the public’s best interest. They have failed to stop the project in the face of public outcry. Without adequate choice, we feel the council left us no other option.” ... “It could go all the way to the (Illinois) Supreme Court,” [Ed McNamara, a Springfield attorney versed in utility litigation] said.

Talk about "The American Way Of Life Is Non-Negotiable". The idea that one little energy-saving venture is met with this much opposition does not bode well for the future.

I suppose in all fairness I should point out that the people who are really going to suffer from smart meters: the people whose salaries depend on walking from meter to meter collecting the readings. The same article points out:

Naperville residents can choose to have a hardwired smart meter at an extra upfront cost of $68.35 and an extra monthly fee of $24.75, Lalvani said. The extra monthly fee will cover the cost of paying a person to go to the meter physically to get readings.

Let's face it, paperless billing wasn't about going green, it was about the utility companies cutting costs by getting rid of worker's salaries they paid to maintain the paper bills. Now smart meters are about eliminating more jobs to cut costs. Utility companies don't really have eco-friendly consciousnesses beyond what it takes to obscure their true motivations for doing things by playing little "green smoke and mirrors" games.
