I am a solid member of the proletariat. We do a lot of things to keep going though. We cut our own wood, make some of our own food and sell things in a number of antique and junk shops along with teaching and running a couple of very small businesses. We aren't the Trumps, but neither are we the Cramdens.

Interesting that they think a household with one income earner making 100 K is equal to a household where he makes 60K and she brings in 40K. No adjustment for the cost of day care or the cost of commuting to two different job sites. Also when they go to retire the couple that retires from the one 100K income get his plus one half his for her. The other couple gets his based on 60K and she has to take half of his or what she can get from her 40K. Both couples paid in the same amount but what they get is very different.

Top 17%... but taking into account net child support (wife gets less than I pay out) and daycare for a toddler... pushes that down to top 24%. (2nd income wouldn't exist but for daycare and child support cannot be opted out of at this point)

I am a human being, which makes me a binary integer, I am currently a 1 and when
I assume room temperature I will be a zero. My feet sometimes approach room temperature
right before I get into bed, and I put my popsicle tootsies on Madame's legs and she kicks back
and hits me in my two 00's and I warm up all over, and am once again a real 1. A real one
with two aching zeroes, but a real 1 all right. I am 66.66% sure this entire post is factual.

It should really be based on net income after tax. Romney pays 14% tax, I pay 45% (in Australia).

For last year I was just inside the middle third! big money for me!

But compared to when I was a 20%er I have probably as much folding money because my bills are much less.

So my preferred score would be based on how much you must earn to crack the monthly nut compared to how much you are earning. So if you must spend 99% of your income just to get by you're a 99%er - by that reckoning I'm more of a 30%er than 70%.

Agree with Pops above.

If you're making 120k as a family, with two earners and a part time earning kid and a non-earning rugrat, two large student loans, child care expense, a mortgage on a 2500sf house that you got hitched to during the boom, and a new car loan because you burn 40k miles / yr commuting and have to replace vehicles often, you probably feel like you're getting hosed stem to stern.

Same family making 60k with one earner, no car commute, in a two bedroom apartment, and no student loans, and you get care free life.

Or the ones with modest incomes sitting on large estates/trusts? Are they 50%'ers or are they the 1%'ers you really hate most?

I just have to give my American friends a poke. Sometimes it's easy to forget there is a whole world using the resources you guys are competing for by maxing the credit card then lifting the max. You guys are ALL 3%. If you want me to prove it I will. Otherwise the thread title and OP are off tap on a global website with global readership. Framed as is this is a conversation only about the USA.
