Peak Oil News Addiction

Unread postby babystrangeloop » Sun 04 Mar 2012, 09:35:36

I've (barely) started to think about the drive (motivation) to follow peak oil incessantly in the news. In my case I think it's fear-based. I think I'm trying to judge how much time there is left based on the types of news reports I see. I filter them all through my "peak oil is real" ideology so I view any "peak oil is a myth" ones as pure mendacity, but that's not really on the topic of peak oil news addiction. The main divide between harmless or beneficial habits like breathing and nasty addictions is the results of pursuing it, what it does to your life.

Addiction is not limited to substances, there are process addictions like gambling which share enough of the same elements as substance addictions (the buying of the substance has been reported to be part of a substance addiction so even substance addictions are partially process addictions.) Peak oil is complicated since not paying attention could harm you as much as paying attention. Overeating is probably a good model to start with for peak oil news addiction since you must eat food, just the excess eating of food is the harmful addictive process.

Mass destruction involves more than personal death.
Peak oil implies mass destruction.
If you aren't obsessing over it why do you have a post count of 8135 now?
I don't mean to attack you but the data is inconsistent with your statement.
Could it be you are fooling yourself?

One of the biggest issues with addiction is denial. Denial enables the addict to continue their harmful behavior.

I'm not in denial, just enjoying the time left I have on this Planet. :)

I guess I just want more than you. I want my life the way it was in early 2004 before I ate of the fruit of knowledge of peak oil.

Either that or elevate enough people so it isn't abnormal to know.

But the world is so lame it's still adjusting to web cams let alone peak oil.

Why, Cog, so nice to see you also not worrying about it.
Your post count is a mere 2395 so you can't possibly be an addict in denial, huh?
