The discovery of the ancient village of Chachapoya, found in the Amazonian jungle in 2007, could help historians unlock the secrets of a legendary tribe. Chachapoya means Warriors of the Clouds. Little is known of the Cloud People of Peru, an ancient white tribe now extinct. The tribe had blonde or red hair and pale skin, which intrigues historians since there is no known European ancestry in the region.
We know from Spanish records, including Pedro Pizarro's account of the invasion of South America that the Inca ruling family had whiter skin than the Spaniards themselves. He described some as having red hair.
His account was confirmed by the discovery of red haired mummies in the desert of Paracas, on the pacific coast. In fact, virtually all the well preserved bodies of Nazca priests are clearly caucasian.
The mystery for historians is where did they come from? Were they Europeans who crossed the Atlantic long before Colombus?
