One in seven thinks end of world is coming: poll

Unread postby Loki » Sat 05 May 2012, 19:05:28

Doom, doom, doom!

(Reuters) - - Nearly 15 percent of people worldwide believe the world will end during their lifetime and 10 percent think the Mayan calendar could signify it will happen in 2012, according to a new poll....

Responses to the international poll of 16,262 people in more than 20 countries varied widely with only six percent of French residents believing in an impending Armageddon in their lifetime, compared to 22 percent in Turkey and the United States and slightly less in South Africa and Argentina.
But only seven percent in Belgium and eight percent in Great Britain feared an end to the world during their lives.

About one in 10 people globally also said they were experiencing fear or anxiety about the impending end of the world in 2012. The greatest numbers were in Russia and Poland, the fewest in Great Britain.

The world will end. The real question is when?

And, part two of that question: Will any of us still be alive to see it? IMO, we are going to be able to see things setting up for a catastrophe, but it will be a sudden shock just the same.

I would like to know the exact wording of the poll, and what other questions were asked to know how they came to this conclusion. Obviously the world isn't going to end, but many people in places like Egypt, Libya and Greece have all recently experienced TEOTW as THEY know it. Nowhere is immune to that kind of EOTW.

People who ask me questions!

I don't want to decide who (like murderers, rapists, child & animal abusers, warmongers, etc) would be the first to go, or, why they'd be the first we wouldn't miss (socially defective, too much time and resources spent trying to prevent their behaviors, greed, etc), so I will just leave it to chance.
We all have to go sometime.

True. But what level or type of infirmity would we use to decide? Those who have Type II diabetes, for example, versus those with operable cancers? Or get rid of both? The old, on the grounds that they are going to go soon anyway? Give everyone an IQ test at age 10 and take out those scoring under the median? That would have the advantage of improving the breeding pool, of much more value than just trimming the old limbs, as it were. Plus, doing so would probably change the distribution of intelligence results of the prodigy of the first rounders, thereby continuous evolving the population to one of higher and higher intelligence. Humans using Darwin's ideas to improve the species.

Seems like a planned descent is preferable to a random one, but maybe that's just me.

The end of the world as we know it is always a possibility.

They laughed at Noah. Us peakers have been predicting the end of the way things are for a while now.

Just because it hasn't happened yet doesn't mean it can't.

Thats the turd person you and Vision keep going on about? Sorry, I thought that the reason the poll made the site was because those who believe in the end of the world are....well....more plentiful than originally supposed and obviously fast crashers are still scattered about here and there. Admittedly a bit thin, but still around.

There are 6 or 7 deteriorating situations, any of which could change the world beyond what I currently recognize. I am hoping for another 30-40 years of life before I check out.

Do I think there is 30-40 years left? Absolutely. Do I think each year those situations will get a little worse? Absolutely. Do I think humans will ignore the problem as long as possible? Absolutely.

Only hope I might have for humans long term is that I am vastly over-estimating the importance of things like viable oceans, drinkable water, breathable air, food, medicine and so on. Who needs those, right?
