Bacteria outbreak due to ocean warming

Unread postby Ferretlover » Sun 22 Jul 2012, 21:38:33

I know everything on this planet is tied together, but sometimes it still surprises me:
Bacteria outbreak in Northern Europe due to ocean warming, study says
Paper provides evidence that warming patterns of Baltic Sea have coincided with emergence of Vibrio infections By Nina Chestney, Reuters
LONDON — Man-made climate change is the main driver behind the unexpected emergence of a group of bacteria in northern Europe which can cause gastroenteritis, new research by a group of international experts shows.
The paper, published in the journal Nature Climate Change on Sunday, provided some of the first firm evidence that the warming patterns of the Baltic Sea have coincided with the emergence of Vibrio infections in northern Europe.
Vibrios is a group of bacteria which usually grow in warm and tropical marine environments. The bacteria can cause various infections in humans, ranging from cholera to gastroenteritis-like symptoms from eating raw or undercooked shellfish or from exposure to seawater.

Interesting article, thanks!

By the way, try using a tiny url or bitly url...

You can also strip away the rest of the URL. Hence,

Thanks, Steam. It wouldn't parse the regular way, and I wasn't quite sure where to cut it off. :)

Thank you, too, ralfy! :)

I recall reading about this as a distinct possibility. It's not like we haven't been warned.

Maybe this is why there have been so many mass die-offs of various species along the coasts of South America? I've been reading about them happening here and there recently. Nobody has put forth a cogent theory yet. Climate change related bacteria or virus blooms make sense, though, because they would come fast enough for a population not to have been able to prepare through the usual lesser exposure.

You might be right, evil.
Thanks for the heads-up on the book, ritter. I will look for it. :)
Added note: Found the book on Amazon-sounds good.

About The Coming Plague, I remember one part referring to billions of viruses on earth, and even though most of them are harmless to human beings, we've identified only a fraction, and for that we have treatment for a much smaller number.

Also, "super bugs" are supposed to become more rampant during the second decade of the new century, with various countries fighting over water and other resources.

Yes. There is also discussion of how we are creating these super bugs by overuse and incorrect use of antibiotics. Then there is also the dilute swill of antibiotic residual that we flush down the toilets and into the rivers that slowly allows those bugs to evolve resistance. We've made a mess of it.
